WALES, Great Britain, June 9. THE full list of 23 swimmers named to Wales’ Commonwealth Games swimming team was released, and the country’s three medalists from 2010 lead a team made mostly of newcomers to senior international racing.<\/p>\n
Headlining the roster is Jazz Carlin, who is going into the meet as the top Commonwealth swimmer in the fastest swimmer in the 800 free and second-fastest in the 400 free. The 23-year-old was second in the 200 free and third in the 400 at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, and notably did not compete in the 800 four years ago. Now, she’s the world leader in the 800 with the opportunity to give Wales its first swimming gold medal in the Commonwealth Games since 2006.<\/p>\n
Carlin was one of seven swimmers preselected to the Welsh team based on performances at last year’s world championships and U.S. Open. All but two — Robert Holderness and Thomas Haffield — made the team based on swims at worlds. Jemma Lowe returns to the meet after winning bronze in the 100 fly in 2010, and Georgia Davies will have a chance to improve on her swim in the 50 back that tied her for the bronze with Australia’s Emily Seebohm.<\/p>\n

The remaining swimmers on the roster added their names either at the British nationals last month or the Cardiff International meet last weekend. One of the top names on the list is 17-year-old Daniel Jervis, who won the junior-level 1500 free at British nationals to earn his spot on the team. The roster includes two disability swimmers, Jack Thomas and Ryan West, who will who will race in separate divisions at the meet.<\/p>\n
