Carmel Sweeps CIF San Diego Section Division II Championships"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>EL CAJON, California, May 27. THE Mt. Carmel High School girls edged six-time defending champions Cathedral Catholic High School by a single point, 204-203, to win the CIF San Diego Section Division II Championships last weekend at Granite Hills High School. Meanwhile, the Mt. Carmel boys repeated their title from last year, scoring 209 points to top Canyon Crest Academy\u2019s 171 points.<\/p>\n<p>Mt. Carmel started their meet off on a winning note by taking the opening relay. Georgia Reilly, Micah Toetter, Sabrina Hughes and Jordan Gormaly touched in 1:49.85 to win the 200 medley relay over Del Norte\u2019s Emily Nguyen, Evelyn Luu, Alexandra Carter and Sydney Schuette, who touched half a second later in 1:50.32. Coronado took third in the race, as Alex Rodman, Callie Dunham, Haley Chasin and Hannah Storum stopped the clock in 1:52.22.<\/p>\n<p>The boys\u2019 200 medley relay featured an exciting finish between La Jolla and Canyon Crest Academy. Canyon Crest held the lead at the final exchange by about half a second before La Jolla came charging back. At the finish, Canyon Crest\u2019s Garrett Schmid, Anthony Kang, Brendan Santana and Eric Li had just enough to out-touch La Jolla\u2019s Zach Wallace, Parker Seale, Dominick Wallace and Alex Tete, 1:37.62 to 1:37.95. Mt. Carmel rounded out the top three finishers with Minh Hong, Michael Nathanson, Dana Barber and Jacob Weber touching in 1:39.01.<\/p>\n<p>West Hills\u2019 Sarah Nowaski claimed the first individual title up for grabs at the meet, winning the girls\u2019 200 free in 1:50.91. Jessica Pentlarge of Cathedral Catholic moved up one spot from third to second with a 1:53.09, while top seed Julia Toronczak of West Hills slipped to third in the final with a 1:53.27. Grant Schenk of Mt. Carmel dropped almost five seconds from his prelims swim to earn the boys\u2019 200 free title in 1:38.03. Point Loma\u2019s Jason O\u2019Brien also had a huge time drop in finals, taking off more than three seconds to finish in the runner-up spot at 1:39.44. Valhalla\u2019s Michael Salazar took third in 1:40.43.<\/p>\n<p>Mt. Carmel picked up a second straight win as Georgia Reilly topped the girls\u2019 200 IM final in 2:07.75. She just held off Christian\u2019s Taylor Lynch, who closed the gap on the final 50 and wound up second in 2:08.26. Coronado\u2019s Alex Rodman finished third in 2:08.91. Ramona\u2019s Garrett Glaudini won the boys\u2019 200 IM in 1:50.70, just over half a second in front of Canyon Crest\u2019s Garrett Schmid, who came in at 1:51.26. Micah Ornelas of West Hills moved up one spot on the podium to third with a 1:52.90.<\/p>\n<p>Cathedral Catholic\u2019s Mary Roberts established herself as the quickest sprinter in the girls\u2019 field, winning the 50 free in dominating fashion with a 23.94. Sabrina Hughes of Mt. Carmel finished more than six tenths behind in 24.57, just ahead of her teammate, Ivy Provines (24.61). Roberts\u2019 classmate, Jordan Colina, looked equally dominant in the boys\u2019 50 free final, as he came up with a six-tenth victory as well in 21.28. Steele Canyon\u2019s Aaron Cardoza also broke 22, finishing second in 21.91. Coronado\u2019s Riley Ferguson rounded out the top three in 22.02.<\/p>\n<p>Escondido Charter\u2019s Taylor Pamplin captured the girls\u2019 1-meter diving title by 50 points with a score of 303.35, breaking the section record of 269.05 set by Rancho Bernardo\u2019s Carly Doi in 2013. Alexa Jones of Steele Canyon came in second in 253.15, while Canyon Crest\u2019s Leah Buford (245.00). Santana\u2019s Chase Webster won the boys\u2019 1-meter crown with 334.25 points. Drew Webb of Del Norte (291.75) and Mason Mercer of Canyon Crest (220.80) placed second and third.<\/p>\n<p>Following the diving break, Cathedral Catholic earned another victory, this time from Cora McClelland in the 100 fly. McClelland touched first in 55.84 to top Canyon Crest\u2019s Tracy Chen (57.18) and Cathedral Catholic teammate Madeline Cosgrove (58.57). Michael Salazar of Valhalla picked up another top three finish at the meet, winning the boys\u2019 100 fly title in 49.03, the only sub-50 swim of the meet. Kevin Mendoza of Southwest almost broke 50 but came up just shy, posting a 50.05 for second. Steele Canyon\u2019s Shawn Howen came in third at 50.82.<\/p>\n<p>Mary Roberts of Cathedral Catholic swept the sprint free events, adding a victory in the 100 free to her win in the 50 earlier with a 52.69. Ivy Provines of Mt. Carmel, who finished third in the 50, moved up to second in the 100 with a 53.39. Del Norte\u2019s Sydney Schuette touched .05 behind in 53.44. Ramona\u2019s Garrett Glaudini also swept his individual events, adding a win in the 100 free to his first place finish in the 200 IM earlier. Glaudini stopped the clock in 47.01 to finish just ahead of Cathedral Catholic\u2019s Jordan Colina (47.12) and Coronado\u2019s Israel Dedina (47.21).<\/p>\n<p>Sarah Nowaski of West Hills swept the mid-distance free events at the meet, winning the 500 free by almost 10 seconds with a 4:57.77. Cathedral Catholic\u2019s Madeline Cosgrove came in second in 5:07.75, ahead of Coronado\u2019s Haley Chasin (5:11.89). Mt. Carmel\u2019s Grant Schenk and Point Loma\u2019s Jason O\u2019Brien put on a show for the crowd in the boys\u2019 500, battling out front the entire race. At the finish, Schenk got the better of O\u2019Brien, but not by much \u2013 4:22.09 to 4:22.70. Canyon Crest\u2019s Alexander Santana out-touched two others for third in 4:41.85.<\/p>\n<p>Cathedral Catholic dominated the girls\u2019 200 free relay, winning the race by three seconds as Jessica Pentlarge, Madeline Cosgrove, Cora McClelland and Mary Roberts touched in 1:38.20. Mt. Carmel took second in 1:41.36 with Sarah Carrier, Jordan Gormaly, Chantal Sengsourinho and Ivy Provines each contributing a leg. Elizabeth Horn, Reese Ellestad, Anna Stahlak and Jasmine Miller raced to a third place finish for Valhalla, stopping the clock in 1:41.42.<\/p>\n<p>Riley Ferguson, Erik Armes, Bill Kusters and Israel Dedina claimed the boys\u2019 200 free relay title for Coronado with a 1:27.41, more than a second ahead of Mt. Carmel\u2019s Chris Evangelista, Jake Danzer, Vincent Townsend and Grant Schenk (1:28.51). La Jolla was the only other school to break 1:30, as Westin Waldburger, Jake LeBeau, Alex Tete and Jorge Jimenez came in at 1:28.84.<\/p>\n<p>Mt. Carmel\u2019s Georgia Reilly, who already won the 200 IM earlier in the meet, made it two-for-two with a close victory in the 100 back. Reilly held off three other swimmers to take first in 57.20, with Coronado\u2019s Alex Rodman (57.33) and Cathedral Catholic\u2019s Jessica Pentlarge (57.67) right on her heels. The boys\u2019 100 back final also featured a tight race as the top two swimmers were separated by only .18. Micah Ornelas of West Hills led the way in 50.57, while Garrett Schmid of Canyon Crest touched right behind in 50.75. Brendan Barry of Cathedral Catholic rounded out the top three in 51.99.<\/p>\n<p>Taylor Lynch of Christian topped the girls\u2019 100 breast final in 1:07.22, moving up a spot from her second place seed of 1:08.99. Top qualifier Evelyn Luu of Del Norte faded to second in 1:08.18 after posting a 1:07.49 in prelims. Megan Cali of Academy of Our Lady of Peace hit the wall third in 1:09.74. Ramona\u2019s Carlo Silva had the quickest 100 breast in the boys\u2019 competition at 58.56, with Del Norte\u2019s Austin Nguyen about half a second behind in 59.02. Cory Davison gave Ramona a 1-3 finish in the event with his third place effort of 1:00.42.<\/p>\n<p>Cathedral Catholic wrapped up the meet with a second relay victory. Jessica Pentlarge, Madeline Cosgrove, Cora McClelland and Mary Roberts stopped the clock in 3:33.36 to easily knock off Mt. Carmel\u2019s Micah Toetter, Georgia Reilly, Ivy Provines and Sabrina Hughes\u2019 3:37.27. Canyon Crest finished third in 3:39.35 with solid efforts from Allison Liu, Samantha Shao, Crystal Yang and Tracy Chen.<\/p>\n<p>Mt. Carmel raced to a win in the final boys\u2019 relay as Jacob Weber, Chris Evangelista, Jake Danzer and Grant Schenk touched first in 3:12.68. Cathedral Catholic\u2019s foursome of Brendan Barry, John Horne, Ben Bleichwehl and Jordan Colina finished second in 3:14.15, just ahead of Canyon Crest\u2019s Garrett Schmid, Alexander Santana, David Twyman and Eric Li (3:14.28).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>EL CAJON, California, May 27.
