GOLD COAST, Australia, May 26. THE 2014 Hancock Prospecting Pan Pacific Swimming Championships are coming to the Gold Coast this August with public tickets going on sale TODAY.<\/p>\n
Fresh from the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, the Australian Swim Team will take on the might of the USA, Japan, Canada and more at the new Gold Coast Aquatic Centre, Southport.<\/p>\n
The four days of world class swimming action will feature the world\u2019s best from August 21 to 24, with more than 20 world and Olympic champions set to battle it out in the pool, and the 10km elite open water competition (25 August) at the Marine Stadium, Southport Spit.<\/p>\n
Australia\u2019s best swimmers including world champions Cate Campbell, James Magnussen and Christian Sprenger, five-time Olympic medallist Alicia Coutts and Gold Coast young guns Cameron McEvoy and Jordan Harrison will all be in action.<\/p>\n
Minister for Tourism, Major Events, Small Business and the Commonwealth Games Jann Stuckey said the 2014 Hancock Prospecting Pan Pacific Swimming Championships would provide visitors with the opportunity to witness one of the world\u2019s most prestigious swimming meets on the Gold Coast.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is with great excitement we welcome the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships back to Queensland for the first time in 25 years, demonstrating to a national and international audience that Queensland and the Gold Coast is a premier event and holiday destination,\u201d said Ms Stuckey.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe 2014 Pan Pacific Swimming Championships will be the first major international sporting event to be held at the newly redeveloped Gold Coast Aquatic Centre, highlighting its significance as a world-class sporting venue ahead of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Queensland Government\u2019s 20-year plan for tourism, Destination Success, encourages support for events such as the 2014 Hancock Prospecting Pan Pacific Swimming Championships which drive visitation to destinations like the Gold Coast.\u201d<\/p>\n
Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate said swimming was part of the Gold Coast\u2019s DNA and urged locals to come and support the Australian team at the new aquatic centre.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have Australia\u2019s newest international\u2013standard aquatic centre hosting one of the world\u2019s most prestigious swimming competitions right here in our backyard,\u201d said Cr Tate.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs the first major competition to be held at the new aquatic centre, this is a unique opportunity for the community to come and be part of our city\u2019s history.\u201d<\/p>\n
Swimming Australia President John Bertrand said the chance for our swim team to represent Australia, in Australia, is a huge opportunity for the sport.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur swimmers seldom get the chance to swim for the Green & Gold in home waters and I know they are all looking forward to doing just that on the Gold Coast in August,\u201d said Bertrand.<\/p>\n
