The pre-race ritual can have a calming effect for a swimmer before a big race, and Goldberg stresses that the athlete will need to be in the moment and not pay attention the many distractions. Goldberg said many age group coaches treat parents as the enemy, but he noted that if parents are better educated by coaches, the relationship will improve.
