SCOTTSDALE, Arizona, May 25. EVEN though there is one more day of distance at the Cactus Classic on Memorial Day tomorrow, tonight proved to be the getaway day for many swimmers in attendance. The two top draws of the meet, Roland Schoeman and Matt Grevers, both pulled out of their finals swims. <\/p>\n
PAC’s Max Yakubovich took home the men’s 50-meter fly title in 25.41 after Matt Grevers nearly posted the fastest time of the event with a 25.94 in prelims before scratching tonight. Tucson Ford’s Andrew Porter took second in 25.61, while Scottsdale’s Ryan Hoffer, 15, placed third in 25.64. Roland Schoeman did clock the best time of the day with a 25.10 then no-showed the finale. <\/p>\n
Grevers put up an easy speed time of 2:08.80 in the men’s 200-meter backstroke prelims before scratching finals again. Scottsdale’s Kaleb Gould won the title in 2:11.70 with Tucson Ford’s Hunter Thompson taking second in 2:13.16. PSC’s Max Montour snared third in 2:15.32. <\/p>\n
Schoeman had another finale no-show in the men’s 100-meter free after leading prelims with a 50.83. Grevers took third in prelims with a 53.83 but scratched the finale. Tucson Ford’s Trey Cashion won the title in 52.78 with Nicholas Magana (53.08) and Jack Blake (53.36) rounding out the podium. <\/p>\n
Tucson Ford’s Margo Geer grabbed another sprint free win with a 56.67 in the women’s 100-meter free. Teammates Bonnie Brandon (58.61) and Taylor Schick (58.97) finished 2-3 right behind the Wildcat. Scottsdale’s Katie Shannahan clinched the women’s 200-meter IM title in 2:25.72, while Shannyn Hultin (2:26.03) and Nike Fellows (2:30.72) posted second and third-place finishes. <\/p>\n
Scottsdale’s Samantha Fazio topped the women’s 50-meter fly in 28.95 with Tucson Ford’s Leticia Lelli taking second in 29.28. Scottsdale’s Angel Van Hofwegen finished third in 29.29. Tucson Ford’s Bonnie Brandon took the women’s 200-meter back crown in 2:19.93 with Juanita Barretto finishing second in 2:23.58. Taylor Schick of Ford grabbed third in 2:25.87.<\/p>\n
Tucson Ford’s Sara Borendame hit the wall in 1:15.32 to win the women’s 100-meter breaststroke finale, while Tory Houston posted a second-place time of 1:16.95. Scottsdale’s Taylor Shewchuk pocketed third overall in 1:17.25. ASU’s Thibaut Capitaine snatched the men’s 100-meter breast title in 1:05.34 with Andrew Sovero taking second in 1:06.31. Tucson Ford’s Zach Hojnacki earned third overall in 1:08.04. <\/p>\n
Zac Dalby clocked a 2:12.02 this morning in the men’s 200-meter IM but elected to scratch tonight. Andrew Porter won the title in 2:12.51. Christopher Webb (2:13.76) and Pavel Bello (2:16.92) placed second and third. <\/p>\n
