LAS VEGAS, Nevada, May 25. THE Bishop Gorman High School girls and Palo Verde High School boys swam away with the team titles last night at the 2014 Nevada Interscholastic Athletic Association Swimming and Diving State Championships. Bishop Gorman tallied 130 points to win the girls\u2019 meet ahead of Palo Verde (91) and Galena (64). On the boys\u2019 side, Palo Verde earned a narrow two-point victory in the team standings, scoring 90 points to out-do Green Valley (88) and Coronado (87). Four state records fell at the meet, which took place on the campus of UNLV.<\/p>\n

Bishop Gorman\u2019s foursome of Rachel Boodt, Catie Miller, Marley Maluafiti and Maria Geraghty kicked off the meet with a convincing win in the girls\u2019 200 medley relay, touching in a time of 1:48.37 to best Galena\u2019s Rachel Matsumura, Megan Henley, Kenzie Murphey and McKenna Meyer, who touched in 1:51.45. Palo Verde claimed third in the race in 1:52.14 behind Reese Lamph, Izzy Goldsmith, Adri Piccininni and Taylor McCoy.<\/p>\n

In the boys\u2019 medley relay, Coronado\u2019s Jake Chir, Nick Moorehead, Parker Evans and Jesse Mathews pulled away on the breaststroke leg and never looked back, winning in 1:36.16. Palo Verde\u2019s quartet of Luke Trafton, Bryce Rogers, Johnny Williams and Thomas Finley came in second in 1:38.37, followed by Green Valley\u2019s Michael Velazquez, Solomon Shire, Carter Friedrich and Kyle McKercher (1:39.09).<\/p>\n

In the girls\u2019 200 free, Galena\u2019s McKenna Meyer established a new state record of 1:49.25 on her way to the state title. Julie Hardt set the previous record of 1:49.63 in 2000. Palo Verde\u2019s Erin Emery distanced herself from the field to take second in 1:51.44, while her teammate Hailey Houck came in third in 1:54.28. Minutes after swimming the backstroke leg on Coronado\u2019s winning medley relay, Jake Chir got back in the pool and scored a close win in the boys\u2019 200 free. Chir (1:41.56) held off Basic\u2019s Liam Wetzel (1:41.86) and Palo Verde\u2019s Logan Houck (1:41.92) for the win.<\/p>\n

A second state record fell in the girls\u2019 200 IM, as Bishop Manogue\u2019s Madi Hurst lowered Katy Houston\u2019s 2003 record of 2:03.40 by almost half a second to 2:02.97. Green Valley\u2019s Abigail Richter wasn\u2019t too far off the old record either, finishing second in 2:04.44. Gorman\u2019s Anne Boodt took third in 2:06.81. Green Valley\u2019s Michael Velazquez led the boys\u2019 200 IM from start to finish en route to a 1:51.36. Legacy\u2019s Isaiah Magsino stayed in contact with Velazquez for the first 100 and wound up second in 1:54.50, with Durango\u2019s Nicholas McDowell in third (1:59.09).<\/p>\n

Bishop Gorman\u2019s Amy Lubawy took down the third girls\u2019 state record in as many events, becoming the first Nevada high school swimmer to clear 23 in the 50 free. Lubawy touched in 22.98 to erase Alyssa Cady from the record books. Cady swam a 23.48 in 2004 while representing Silverado. Shelby Koontz of Douglas almost broke the old record as well, finishing second with a 23.70. Bishop Gorman\u2019s Marley Maluafiti took third in 24.11. McQueen\u2019s Patrick McCrillis captured the boys\u2019 50 free state title in 21.48, leading a trio of swimmers under 22. Connor Smith of Green Valley touched second in 21.64, followed by Parker Evans of Coronado in 21.97.<\/p>\n

Bishop Manogue took the top two spots in the girls\u2019 1-meter diving event, with Ally Concepcion (483.55) and Makenzie Caufield (427.10) leading the way. Bishop Gorman\u2019s Josje Larreau claimed third in 384.75. Brayden Greenwald picked up another win for Coronado, winning the boys\u2019 1-meter title with 486.00 points. Reed\u2019s Bail Aiello earned his school\u2019s first top three finish by scoring 414.20 points. Shadow Ridge\u2019s Corey Spivey took third with 381.00 points.<\/p>\n

Bishop Gorman kept the ball rolling with another 1-2 finish, this time in the girls\u2019 100 fly. Marley Maluafiti (56.16) and Catie Miller (57.76) touched first and second, followed by Basic\u2019s Melanie Harris (58.55). Spring Valley\u2019s Jay Yang topped the boys\u2019 field with a 50.86, ahead of Green Valley\u2019s Carter Friedrich (51.75) and Coronado\u2019s Nick Moorehead (52.01).<\/p>\n

Bishop Gorman\u2019s Amy Lubawy broke her second state record of the day, this time in the 100 free. Lubawy took almost a full second off Marshi Smith\u2019s 2002 record of 50.76 in the 100 free, posting a 49.82 to become the first under 50 in the event. Douglas\u2019 Shelby Koontz almost broke the old record as well, touching in 50.89 for second. Izzy Goldsmith of Palo Verde swam a 51.22 for third. McQueen\u2019s Patrick McCrillis then won his second individual event of the meet, topping the 100 free in 46.02 to sweep the sprint free events. Coronado\u2019s Jake Chir came in second in 46.87, ahead of Palo Verde\u2019s Luke Trafton (48.52).<\/p>\n

McKenna Meyer of Galena swept the mid-distance freestyle events, adding a win in the 500 to her victory in the 200 earlier. Meyer touched first in 4:52.76, just holding off Palo Verde\u2019s Erin Emery (4:53.21). Hailey Houck, also of Palo Verde, finished third in 5:07.74. After taking third in the 200 free, Palo Verde\u2019s Logan Houck moved up two spots to first in the 500 with a 4:31.91. Carter Grimes of Centennial (4:37.36) and Nicholas McDowell of Durango (4:38.98) finished second and third.<\/p>\n

Bishop Gorman\u2019s Maria Geraghty, Amy Lubawy, Anne Boodt and Marley Maluafiti dominated the girls\u2019 200 free relay, winning by almost four seconds in 1:37.35. They just missed the state record of 1:36.98, set by Bishop Gorman in 2012. Palo Verde\u2019s Taylor McCoy, Kasdyn Rafie, Izzy Goldsmith and Erin Emery raced to second in 1:41.06, while Coronado\u2019s Sara Gong, Tayler Luna, Tara Wise and Shyla Swan got third in 1:42.56.<\/p>\n

In the boys\u2019 200 free relay, Green Valley just held off Coronado for the win. Michael Velazquez, Solomon Shire, Carter Friedrich and Connor Smith touched in 1:26.83 to just out-swim Parker Evans, Jesse Mathews, Nick Moorehead and Jake Chir (1:27.16). Palo Verde\u2019s Johnny Williams, Daniel Mortensen, Thomas Finley and Logan Houck placed third in 1:29.41.<\/p>\n

Rancho picked up its first win of the meet when Tonicia Thomas won the girls\u2019 100 back. Thomas turned first at the halfway point and held on for the victory with a time of 56.32, just ahead of Bishop Gorman\u2019s Anne Boodt (56.53) and Galena\u2019s Rachel Matsumura (56.87). Legacy\u2019s Isaiah Magsino earned his second top two finish of the day, winning the boys\u2019 100 back in 50.84. Carter Grimes of Centennial (51.81) and Jeff Tung of Reno (52.04) rounded out the top three.<\/p>\n

Izzy Goldsmith of Palo Verde captured the girls\u2019 100 breast state title in 1:03.20, comfortably ahead of Basic\u2019s Melanie Harris (1:04.10) and Bishop Manogue\u2019s Madi Hurst (1:04.39). Michael Velazquez of Green Valley won his second individual event of the meet with a 57.50 in the boys\u2019 race. Jay Yang of Spring Valley (59.11) and Nick Moorehead of Coronado (59.18) also broke 1:00 to finish second and third.<\/p>\n

Bishop Gorman wrapped up the girls\u2019 championship title with a sweep of the relays as Amy Lubawy, Anne Boodt, Rachel Boodt and Catie Miller dominated the 400 free relay in 3:33.50. Galena\u2019s McKenna Meyer, Megan Henley, Kenzie Murphey and Rachel Matsumura finished second (3:37.63), while Palo Verde\u2019s Hailey Houck, Reese Lamph, Adri Piccininni and Erin Emery (3:40.93) finished third.<\/p>\n

In the boys\u2019 relay, Green Valley\u2019s Solomon Shire, Kyle McKercher, Carter Friedrich and Connor Smith just out-touched Palo Verde\u2019s Luke Trafton, Daniel Mortensen, Bryce Rogers and Logan Houck, 3:15.81 to 3:16.00, for the win. Bishop Gorman\u2019s foursome of Nick Salvador, Aidan Kennelley, Matthew Golez and Tristan Bunker came in third in 3:25.71.<\/p>\n
