DAVIS High School brought home the combined team title and boys\u2019 title Saturday, May 17 at the Sac-Joaquin Section Swimming and Diving Championships at Tokay High School in Lodi, Calif. Davis scored 628.5 total points to top Granite Bay (604) and Rio Americano (301) in the combined team standings. The Granite Bay girls scored 327 points to top Davis (321.5) and St. Francis (210) in the girls\u2019 meet, while the Davis boys put up 307 points to Granite Bay\u2019s 277 and Jesuit\u2019s 259. Golden Valley\u2019s Connor Hoppe set a national high school record in the boys\u2019 100 breast to highlight an exciting afternoon of swimming.<\/p>\n<p>The girls\u2019 meet got off to an exciting start from the get-go as Davis and Granite Bay treated the crowd to a thrilling finish in the 200 medley relay. After exchanging leads throughout the first three legs, Granite Bay tracked down the win in 1:44.57, only seven one-hundredths ahead of Davis\u2019 1:44.65. Vintage finished third in the race in 1:48.49.<\/p>\n<p>Davis High School\u2019s Chenoa Devine took home the first individual title of the evening, touching first in the 200 free in 1:49.46. Rio Americano\u2019s Sydney Larson, the top qualifier from prelims, finished second in 1:50.54, followed by Woodcreek\u2019s Claire Hammond in 1:51.14.<\/p>\n<p>Davis kept the ball rolling in the next event, as junior Emma Barksdale got to the wall first in the 200 IM. Barksdale completed the race in 2:01.99 to outpace Sacramento\u2019s Claire Pinson (2:03.88) and Granite Bay\u2019s Heaven Quintana (2:05.06).<\/p>\n<p>Alex Rieger made it three wins in a row for Davis, topping the 50 free finale in 23.74 to edge Granite Bay\u2019s Summer Spradley (23.87). Vacaville\u2019s Kimberlee Giggey, the fourth seed after prelims, moved up a spot to third with a 24.21 in finals.<\/p>\n<p>Mikaela Lujan of Nevada Union dominated the 1-meter diving event, scoring 472.30 points for the win. Rio American freshman Rachel Choi had a solid showing in her first section meet, taking second with 390.40 points. Pitman\u2019s Natasha Sondeno scored 386.30 points to finish third.<\/p>\n<p>After posting the top qualifying time in prelims of the 100 fly at 54.23, Vacaville\u2019s Paige Maynard couldn\u2019t quite duplicate that in finals but she still had plenty in the tank to win. Maynard swam a 54.40 to take down Granite Bay\u2019s Heaven Quintana (55.28) and Will C. Wood\u2019s Joanna Curry (55.39).<\/p>\n<p>Davis\u2019 Emma Barksdale earned her second win of the meet in the 100 free, winning comfortably in 51.18. Summer Spradley of Granite Bay finished second for a second time with a 52.01, just .01 in front of St. Francis senior Annclaire Macart (52.02).<\/p>\n<p>Chenoa Devine made it a clean sweep of the freestyle events for Davis with a 4:47.81 in the 500 free. Sacramento\u2019s Claire Pinson touched just over four seconds later in 4:52.01, while Granite Bay\u2019s Jordan Anderson claimed third place honors with a 4:52.79.<\/p>\n<p>Granite Bay took home its second relay win of the meet \u2013 this time but a more sizeable margin \u2013 winning the 200 free relay in 1:35.88. Vacaville finished second in 1:38.13 while Vintage claimed third in 1:38.65.<\/p>\n<p>Davis senior Alex Rieger won both her individual events at the meet, adding a second victory in the 100 back to her 50 free title earlier. Rieger touched in 55.55 to edge Vacaville\u2019s Paige Maynard (55.87) and Will C. Wood\u2019s Joanna Curry (55.97).<\/p>\n<p>In the 100 breast final, Granite Bay\u2019s Julienne Tadena cut almost a second off her prelim time to fly by the field and win in 1:03.09. Top qualifier Mia Facey of Napa dropped to second in 1:04.29 while Davis\u2019 Kathleen Benjamin rounded out the top three in 1:04.62.<\/p>\n<p>Davis put a stamp on the final 400 free relay, dominating the race and winning by nearly five seconds in 3:26.77. Granite Bay finished second in 3:31.42, ahead of St. Francis (3:33.91).<\/p>\n<p>In the boys\u2019 meet, Davis got the meet underway with a dominating performance in the medley relay, touching first by more than four seconds in 1:31.21. Granite Bay finished second in 1:35.99, while Rio Americano rounded out the top three in 1:38.36.<\/p>\n<p>Jesuit\u2019s Chris Weiser held off Davis\u2019 Riley Hickman to win the 200 free, 1:38.88 to 1:39.02. Vacaville\u2019s Billy Mullis, the top qualifier from prelims in 1:38.86, faded to third in finals with a 1:39.26.<\/p>\n<p>After posting a top-qualifying time of 1:47.64 in prelims, Davis senior Matt Whittle fell short of that in finals but still came up with a massive victory. Whittle touched in 1:48.69, four and a half seconds in front of Woodcreek\u2019s CJ Pais (1:53.20) and seven seconds ahead of Granite Bay\u2019s Alek Dendall (1:55.71).<\/p>\n<p>Jesuit\u2019s Keegan Shuping overtook top seed Kevin Wylder to win the 50 free by a tenth, 20.62 to 20.72. Austin Stevenson of Bella Vista moved up two spots from fifth to third with a 21.19 in finals.<\/p>\n<p>Nevada Schultz of C.K. McLatch collected the boys\u2019 1-meter diving title with 471.75 points. Todd Alden of Will C. Wood just beat Austin Foote of Nevada Union for second, 454.80 to 454.05.<\/p>\n<p>Davis\u2019 Matt Whittle, winner of the 200 IM earlier in the day, added another win to his collection with the top time in the 100 fly. Whittle cruised to a 48.30 to move up two spots on the podium from his third place prelim showing. Top seed Kevin Wylder of Granite Bay (49.12) fell short of his prelim time of 48.52 and dropped to second, while Colfax\u2019s Jack Baldoni took third in 49.63.<\/p>\n<p>Keegan Shuping of Jesuit ran down another top seed in the 100 free, taking down Davis\u2019 Riley Hickman to win his second individual event of the meet. Shuping swam a 45.58, while Hickman reached the wall in 46.05. Shane Anderson of Bear River held onto his third seed from prelims with a 46.50.<\/p>\n<p>In the 500 free, Jesuit\u2019s Chris Weiser collected his second title in dominating fashion. Weiser posted a 4:26.46 to out-pace Bear River\u2019s Jack Herron by almost eight seconds as Herron finished in 3:34.41. Tokay\u2019s Robert Griffith placed third in 4:35.97.<\/p>\n<p>Davis went two-for-two in relay action with another win in the 200 free relay. Davis\u2019 foursome finished the race in 1:23.24 to top Granite Bay (1:24.18) and Jesuit (1:24.24).<\/p>\n<p>The boys\u2019 100 backstroke finish came down to the touch as Vacaville\u2019s Billy Mullis rebounded from a third place swim in the 200 free to take first in 49.57, two tenths in front of Vista del Lago\u2019s Matthew Klotz (49.77). CJ Pais of Woodcreek earned another top three finish with a 51.24.<\/p>\n<p>Golden Valley senior Connor Hoppe made the most of his final individual race in high school competition, lowering the national public high school record in the 100 breast to 53.06. Andrew Seliskar set the previous record of 53.24 in February. Jacob Molacek still holds the overall national high school record with a 52.92, also set in February. Davis took the next two spots on the podium with Jonathan Pun (56.34) and Soren Dickens (57.66) taking second and third.<\/p>\n<p>Jesuit claimed the 400 free relay to close out the meet, finishing in 3:05.40.
