AIR Academy captured its third straight Colorado 4A Boys State Swimming and Diving title Saturday night at Edora Pool Ice Center in Fort Collins, compiling 280 points to outdistance Thompson Valley (244) and D\u2019Evelyn (204) for the title.<\/p>\n<p>D\u2019Evelyn got the meet started with a win in the 200 medley relay as Kevin Olson, Daniel Graber, Jake Sbarbaro and Alexander Moreland touched first in 1:35.98. Discovery Canyon\u2019s foursome of Daniel Liu, Jonathan Donehower, David Keller and Blake Lawrie came in second in 1:36.88, followed by Coronado\u2019s Theo Reitweisner, Will Chaney, Greg Shaw and Kyle Allison in 1:37.68.<\/p>\n<p>In the 200 free, Silver Creek junior Tyler Lis picked up his second career state title \u2013 though not in the same event \u2013 with a winning time of 1:42.13. Lis won the 200 IM last year but opted to try out the 200 free instead this year. D\u2019Evelyn\u2019s Jake Sbarbaro rebounded from his team\u2019s 200 medley relay win to take second in 1:43.06, while Air Academy\u2019s Brennan Mays rounded out the top three in 1:43.34.<\/p>\n<p>D\u2019Evelyn picked up another top three finish in the 200 IM as junior Daniel Graber got to the wall first in 1:53.79. Air Academy\u2019s Caleb Hicks finished less than a second behind in 1:54.53, while Silver Creek\u2019s Sam Willett touched third in 1:55.35.<\/p>\n<p>After qualifying sixth for the final of the 50 free, Estes Park senior Forrest Beesley turned up the jets in finals, posting a 21.14 to successfully defend his state title and edge Air Academy\u2019s Hunter Doerr, who hit the wall .09 behind in 21.23. Discovery Canyon\u2019s Blake Lawrie placed third in 21.41.<\/p>\n<p>Mullen senior David Hoffer captured the 1-meter diving title, posting a final score of 556.10 to just miss the 4A state record of 559.45 set by Ben Grado in 2006. Pueblo East\u2019s Vitalii Shestakov scored 477.05 points to take second, while Longmont\u2019s Nick Vaughan placed third with 395.75 points.<\/p>\n<p>In the 100 fly, Thompson Valley\u2019s John Thorne picked up his first of two victories with a winning time of 50.29. Air Academy\u2019s Caleb Hicks finished four tenths back in 50.69, with Discovery Canyon\u2019s David Keller in third at 50.77.<\/p>\n<p>Estes Park\u2019s Forrest Beesley swept the 50 and 100 freestyles for the second year in a row, winning the 100 free in 46.00. Lars Knutson of Montrose hung on for second in 46.79, just one one-hundredth ahead of Air Academy\u2019s Jack Dangremond (46.80).<\/p>\n<p>In the 500 free, Air Academy senior Brennan Mays held off Thompson Valley freshman and top qualifier Liam Gately for the win, 4:35.07 to 4:36.70. Daniel Notarianni of Mullen moved up a spot from his fourth place finish last year to take third in 4:39.96.<\/p>\n<p>Air Academy kept the ball rolling in the 200 free relay as the quartet of Hunter Doerr, Michael Loyd, Tommy Baker and Jack Dangremond swam to a new 4A state record of 1:26.49, erasing the previous record of 1:26.66 set by Coronado in 2013. D\u2019Evelyn\u2019s Alec Sutton, Alexander Moreland, Daniel Graber and Jake Sbarbaro claimed second in 1:28.04 while Coronado\u2019s Evan Kay, Chandler Fulks, Kyle Allison and Will Chaney took third in 1:29.61.<\/p>\n<p>Thompson Valley\u2019s John Thorne added a second win to his victory earlier in the 100 fly with an impressive performance in the 100 back. Thorne lowered his own 4A state record of 49.02 from prelims to 48.82 and won by nearly four seconds. Broomfield\u2019s Blake Logan came in second in 52.49 and Discovery Canyon\u2019s Daniel Liu took third (53.91).<\/p>\n<p>D\u2019Evelyn\u2019s Daniel Graber won his second race of the night in the 100 breast, touching first in 57.35 to top the podium and defend his title from last year. Air Academy\u2019s Michael Loyd swam a 58.89 to take second for the second straight year while Cheyenne Mountain\u2019s Eric Hale touched third in 59.48.<\/p>\n<p>Air Academy capped the meet with a new 4A state record in the 400 free relay. Hunter Doerr, Tommy Baker, Caleb Hicks and Jack Dangremond combined efforts to post a 3:06.84, more than two seconds better than Lewis-Palmer\u2019s 2010 record of 3:08.86.
