CONCORD, California, May 19. THE San Ramon Valley High School girls swimming and diving team scored 342 points en route to the CIF North Coast Section Championship title Saturday night. Campolindo High School (197 points) just edged Carondelet High School (193 points) for second. In the boys\u2019 meet, Northgate High School pulled out a close victory over Granada High School, winning the meet by just 18 points \u2013 264 to 246. Campolindo High School rounded out the top three with 187 points.<\/p>\n
San Ramon Valley got their meet started on a winning note as Gianna Garcia, Heidi Poppe, Abigail Miller and Cailey Steffens dominated the 200 medley relay in 1:42.69. Miramonte finished a distant second in 1:46.47, while Campolindo touched close behind in third at 1:46.65.<\/p>\n
The Granada boys put their stamp on the medley relay in the next event as Trent Trump, Nick Silverthorn, Maxime Rooney and Bryce McLaggan combined efforts to post a 1:30.67, just off the NCS meet record of 1:30.52 set by Campolindo last year. Northgate put up a fight the whole way but couldn\u2019t match the speed of Granada and wound up second in 1:31.47. Heritage placed third in 1:33.58.<\/p>\n
The race for the girls\u2019 200 free title went down to the wire, with three swimmers touching within two tenths of each other. Marin Catholic\u2019s Cali Rauker turned in sixth place at the halfway point but came roaring home to take the win in 1:48.27, .12 ahead of Acalanes\u2019 Brittany Usinger (1:48.39). Top qualifier Moriah Simonds of Granada rounded out the top three in 1:48.47.<\/p>\n
After setting a new NCS meet record of 1:35.69 in prelims, Granada freshman Maxime Rooney couldn\u2019t quite match that time in finals, but he still had plenty in the tank to take the win in 1:36.21. Rooney\u2019s teammate, Nick Silverthorn, overtook two swimmers on the last 50 to take second in 1:36.80, while Analy\u2019s Jon Knox placed third in 1:37.07.<\/p>\n
Petaluma junior Riley Scott claimed the girls\u2019 200 IM title by a comfortable margin, breaking 2:00 in the process with a 1:59.98. San Ramon Valley\u2019s Christina Chong touched well behind in 2:03.37, while Maria Carrillo got its first top three finish of the meet from sophomore Piper Brockley (2:05.15).<\/p>\n
Amador Valley senior Kevin McLaughlin picked up an individual title in his final high school meet, topping the boys\u2019 200 IM in 1:49.39. Castro Valley\u2019s Carson Sand made up a ton of ground on the breaststroke leg but couldn\u2019t close the gap, taking second in 1:50.11. Jake Rollo of San Ramon Valley placed third in 1:53.18.<\/p>\n
Iris Brand kept the ball rolling for Amador Valley with a win in the girls\u2019 50 free. She touched first in 23.28, followed by San Ramon Valley\u2019s Heidi Poppe (23.48) and Athenian\u2019s Emma Cottril (23.55). Terra Linda\u2019s RJ Williams got to the wall first in a close finish in the boys\u2019 50. Williams touched in 20.78 to edge Monte Vista\u2019s Sean Bloore (20.84) and Miramonte\u2019s Gabe Ostler (20.93).<\/p>\n
In an extremely close diving final, Amador Valley senior Lauren Hall beat Irvington junior Emilie Weideman by just 1.60 points, 468.60 to 467.00, for the girls\u2019 1-meter title. Both divers just missed the NCS meet record of 471.20, set by Christina Conn in 1993. Campolindo\u2019s Morgan Matranga took third in 449.85. On the boys\u2019 side, Max Adler of San Rafael captured the 1-meter title with 455.50 points, followed by Las Lomas\u2019 Iaroslav Titov (441.60) and De La Salle\u2019s Jackson Gabler (440.70).<\/p>\n
After finishing second in the 200 free earlier in the meet, Acalanes\u2019 Brittany Usinger topped the field in the girls\u2019 100 fly in 53.46. Carondelet\u2019s Madelyn Murphy claimed second in 54.06, followed by San Ramon Valley\u2019s Gianna Garcia (54.33). College Prep teammates Grant Watson and Arjun Sharma went 1-2 in the boys\u2019 100 fly, touching in 48.98 and 49.00, respectively. Mason Tittle of Northgate took third in 49.52.<\/p>\n
Minutes after taking second in the 100 fly, Carondelet\u2019s Madelyn Murphy returned to the pool and won the 100 free in 50.19, just a tenth ahead of Amador Valley\u2019s Iris Brand (50.29). Mary Ashby of Campolindo rounded out the top three in 50.96. Terra Linda\u2019s Nick Bigot took home the boys\u2019 100 free title with a 44.74, not far ahead of Monte Vista\u2019s Sean Bloore (45.05) and Miramonte\u2019s Gabe Ostler (45.18).<\/p>\n
Granada\u2019s Moriah Simonds, who earlier took third in the 200 free, moved up two spots to first with a 4:47.21 in the girls\u2019 500 free. Montgomery earned its first top three finish of the meet as Jenna Bauer took second in 4:50.23. San Ramon Valley\u2019s Ana Henderson finished third in 4:54.93. Granada freshman Maxime Rooney picked up his second individual title of the meet with a victorious time of 4:26.36 in the boys\u2019 500 free. He held off College Prep\u2019s Talbot Jacobs (4:28.84) and Northgate\u2019s Eric VanBrocklin (4:32.20) for the win.<\/p>\n
San Ramon Valley collected its second girls\u2019 relay title of the meet, this time in the 200 free relay. Heidi Poppe, Marina Smith, Alexa Fusari and Cailey Steffens posted a 1:33.51 to win the race and lower Carondelet\u2019s NCS meet record of 1:34.35 from prelims. Carondelet also went under the previous record with a 1:33.62 but had to settle for second. Mission San Jose picked up third place honors in 1:36.48.<\/p>\n
Northgate won the boys\u2019 200 free relay in a nail-biter over Heritage as Calvin Kirkpatrick, Stanley Wu, Eric VanBrocklin and Mason Tittle touched .11 ahead, 1:24.60 to 1:24.71. Castro Valley was seventh at the final exchange but moved up all the way to third with a 1:25.18.<\/p>\n
Carondelet\u2019s Samantha Coloma won the girls\u2019 100 back handily in 53.85, with Marin Catholic\u2019s Cali Rauker picking up another top two finish with a 55.22. San Ramon Valley\u2019s Gianna Garcia earned her second third place finish of the night with a 55.44.<\/p>\n
Analy\u2019s Jon Knox got to the wall first in the boys\u2019 100 back as he stopped the touchpads in 48.82. Heritage teammates Brandon James (49.10) and Walker Thaning (49.26) claimed the second and third place spots.<\/p>\n
Heidi Poppe of San Ramon Valley cracked the one minute barrier en route to the girls\u2019 100 breast title. Poppe posted a 59.85 to win the event ahead of Petaluma\u2019s Riley Scott (1:00.52) and Miramonte\u2019s Marie Schillinger (1:01.91). In the boys\u2019 100 breast final, a trio of swimmers broke 55 seconds, led by Granada\u2019s Nick Silverthorn in 54.31. Carson Sand of Castro Valley, who qualified fourth in prelims, moved up two spots to second with a 54.54, while San Ramon Valley\u2019s Hank Poppe took third in 54.87.<\/p>\n
Carondelet denied San Ramon Valley the girls\u2019 relay sweep, taking the final 400 free relay in 3:25.37, led by Madelyn Murphy, Kelsey Witkay, Samantha Coloma and Natalie Amberg. San Ramon Valley took second in the relay in 3:28.25, while Campolindo placed third in 3:28.59. The Granada boys concluded the meet with a new NCS record in the 400 free relay as the quartet of Nick Silverthorn, Bryce McLaggan, Trent Trump and Maxime Rooney swam a 2:59.00 to erase their own record of 3:00.13 from prelims. College Prep finished way behind in 3:06.40 while Northgate wrapped up third in 3:06.91.<\/p>\n
