June 26. OLYMPIAN Klete Keller and University of Florida All-American Sara McLarty were the winners of the two distance events on the opening day of competition of the XXXVIth Santa Clara International Swim Meet. The meet is being held at the George Haines International Swim Center.

Keller, 21, the American record-holder in the 400 meter freestyle, came close to beating his personal best at twice the distance — despite being in the midst of heavy training — when he clocked 8:04.35 to win the 800 meter free.

Keller, who even-split his race (4:01.92-4:02.43), took the lead from Venezuela's Ricardo Monasterio, representing the Gator Swim Club, at the 300 meter mark and just kept lengthening it. Monasterio was second in 8:07.80.

Keller's Club Wolverine teammate, Peter Vanderkaay, 18, was a distant third at 8:17.66.

McLarty took the lead at precisely the same point Keller did — the 300 meter turn — passing Rchael Burke and Lauren Costella, then pulling away to notch a decisive win in the women's 1500 meters free.

McLarty, 20, touched in 16:36.53 for the win. Costella, 18, Carson City, was second in 16:43.66, while Curle-Burke's Burke, 19, was third in 16:54.02.

Santa Clara XXXVI International Swim Meet
George Haines International
