IT might not have rang too many bells in the world rankings, but Connor Jaeger picked up his first win as a pro in the men’s 800-meter freestyle at the Arena Grand Prix in Charlotte.

Jaeger posted an easy 7:58.59 for the win, putting him 19th in the SwimVortex world rankings. It’s not as dynamic of a swim as some of the performances just a heat earlier by the ladies in the 1500-meter free, but it is still a win for the Wolverine. He was faster last year at this time, however, with a 7:53.35 here at the Charlotte stop of the Grand Prix.

Matt McLean of NBAC surprised the field with a late night assault on the standings as he posted a second-place 8:03.08 from well back in heat five. He’s been on the rebound after electing to miss the Mesa stop of the Grand Prix, and used tonight to make a bit of a statement.

Michael Klueh checked in with a third-place time of 8:06.18. He’s a veteran of the sport, with some of his best 800s from back in 2011 when he had a 7:52.31 at the World University Games, but his time tonight only fell a handful of seconds off his best in-season time of 8:01.82 from the 2010 Los Angeles Grand Prix stop.

Dynamo’s Kevin Litherland snared fourth place with an 8:06.64, the second best swim of his life in the event. The future Georgia Bulldog has a championship best of 8:01.17 from the 2013 U.S. Open, but tonight’s effort is his best in-season time by several seconds. Previously, he’d charted a time of 8:09.59 at the Georgia Senior Sectionals in 2013.

Additionally, Club Wolverine’s Sean Ryan (8:08.30), Badger’s Ryan Feeley (8:09.03), NBAC’s Nezir Karap (8:13.50) and Tennessee’s Evan Pinion (8:14.02) rounded out the top eight in the timed final event, with one of the other Litherland triplets Mick taking 10th in 8:17.22.

1 Connor Jaeger 23 Club Wolverine-M 7:46.78 7:58.59 NAT
27.98 58.76 (30.78)
1:29.02 (30.26) 2:00.09 (31.07)
2:29.93 (29.84) 3:00.37 (30.44)
3:30.42
