SANTA CLARA, California, May 3. CALIFORNIA’s Nathan Adrian certainly knows how to bring the star power to an event. After clocking a special time in the 50-yard free yesterday, Adrian returned to tie his fastest 100-yard free time ever, which happens to be the American record.<\/p>\n
Swimming in the men’s 25-29 age division, Adrian surged to a 41.08 in the 100-yard free today in Santa Clara. That swim matched his American record of 41.08 set in College Station in 2009. It also happened to demolish the USMS national age group record of 42.13 set by Darian Townsend a year ago.<\/p>\n

Adrian beat Townsend head-to-head as well with Townsend taking second today in 43.13. The day also featured Adrian’s teammate Anthony Ervin crushing the men’s 30-34 100-yard free record with a 43.18. Mike Picotte owned the previous mark with a 44.53 from 2004.<\/p>\n
Additionally, the ever-popular Josh Davis turned up the heat in the men’s 40-44 100-yard freestyle with a 45.15. That time beat Michael Ross’ age group mark of 45.35 set back in 2008.<\/p>\n
After taking down the 200, 500, 1000 and 1650-yard freestyle records in the men’s 80-84 age division in a single swim on night one, David Radcliff, 80, snatched the 100-yard free mark today with a 1:04.60. That beat Frank Piemme’s 2005 record of 1:09.04.<\/p>\n
Anne Williams, 75, followed up in the women’s 75-79 200-yard breast with a 3:30.67. That effort cut nearly a second off Ann Hirsch’s 2006 record of 3:31.35. Steve West, 42, remained on point this weekend with a 2:00.53 in the men’s 40-44 200-yard breast for a national record of his own. He lowered his 2012 time of 2:00.78 a day after downing his 100-yard breast mark.<\/p>\n
David Guthrie, 53, powered past his men’s 50-54 200-yard breast record with a 2:08.44. That time obliterated his 2013 mark of 2:10.76. Rick Colella, 62, kept on rolling here in Santa Clara as he clocked a 2:16.71 in the men’s 60-64 200-yard breast. After taking down two records yesterday, Colella blasted his 2013 standard of 2:18.40.<\/p>\n
Nolan Koon, 24, became the first USMS swimmer to break 50-seconds in the men’s 18-24 100-yard IM with a 49.78. That performance eclipsed the 2001 mark of 50.14 posted by Romain Barneir. Townsend returned after his second-place time in the 100 to sizzle in the men’s 25-29 100-yard IM with a 47.77. That swim cleared the 2010 mark of 48.27 set by Mark Gangloff. Davis continued setting records as the 41-year-old clocked a 51.53 in the men’s 40-44 100-yard IM. That surpassed another Michael Ross mark of 51.85 from 2010.<\/p>\n
A pair of swimmers beat James Elder’s men’s 70-74 100-yard IM record of 1:06.55 from a year ago. Elder, himself 71 years old, clocked a 1:05.05 to smash the mark, while Richard Burns, 70, took second in 1:05.23.<\/p>\n
Noriko Inada, one of the top backstrokers in all of Masters swimming, posted a 25.02 in the women’s 35-39 50-yard back. That swim beat Sheri Hart’s 2010 record of 25.97. Burns, after finishing second to Elder in the 100-yard IM, downed the men’s 70-74 50-yard back record with a 29.91. That swim cleared Yoshi Oyakawa’s mark of 30.25 from 2004.<\/p>\n
The Olympic Club returned for another run of relay records. Katie Kastes (24.05), Meg gill (24.73), Fiona O’Donnell-McCarthy (23.81) and Katherine Raatz (23.11) won the women’s 18+ 200-yard free relay in 1:35.70. That broke the USMS record of 1:36.25 set by San Diego Swim in 2003.<\/p>\n
The foursome of Toni LeClercq (32.37), Sally Dillon (33.75), Kate Carruthers (33.34) and Suzanne Dills (32.03) topped the women’s 65+ 200-yard free relay in 2:11.49. That smashed the 2012 record of 2:16.23 set by Pacific Northwest Masters.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
