ANTWERP, Belgium, May 3. A pair of national records fell by the wayside at the Belgium Open Championships tonight in Antwerp.<\/p>\n
Louis Croenen took down the Belgian record in the men’s 200-meter fly with a 1:56.41. That performance clipped the 1:56.65 set by Mathieu Fontein back at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Croenen also jumped to an eighth-ranked tie with Mitchell Pratt in the SwimVortex world rankings. Belarus’ Yauhen Tsurkin took second in 2:00.17 with Czech’s Jan Sefl placing third in 2:00.21.<\/p>\n
Emmanuel Vanluchene set the second Belgian record of the day with a 2:00.88 in the men’s 200-meter IM. That swim eclipsed the 2:01.85 set by Ward Bauwens just a year ago. Czech’s Pavel Janecek took second in 2:03.13 with Timothy Deolet earning third in 2:05.28.<\/p>\n
Belarus’ Aliaksandra Herasimenia claimed the women’s 50-meter free title in 24.94. That’s just a bit off her ninth-ranked season best of 24.73 from the Belarus Open earlier this year. Jolien Sysmans placed second tonight in 25.54, just missing her Belgian record of 25.37 from 2012. Czech’s Anna Kolarova took third in 25.83.<\/p>\n
Fanny Lecluyse dominated the women’s 100-meter breast in 1:08.94, just half-a-second off Kim Janssens’ Belgian record of 1:08.36 from last summer. Janssens, meanwhile, placed second in 1:11.65 with Jolien Vermeylen taking third in 1:11.79.<\/p>\n
Basten Caerts topped the men’s 100-meter breast in 1:02.87 with Jonas Coreelman finishing third in 1:03.15. Dieter Ruijten picked up third in 1:03.89. Francois Heersbrandt won the men’s 50-meter free in 22.34 with Jasper Aerents taking second in 22.51. Pieter Timmers wound up third in 22.93.<\/p>\n
Maaike Ramael clinched the women’s 100-meter back crown in 1:02.96 with Kimberly Buys earning second in 1:03.25. Jasmijn Verhaegen placed third in 1:04.39. Belarus’ Viktar Staselovich pocketed the men’s 100-meter back title in 56.44 with Czech’s Martin Badura placing second in 56.58. Nils Van Audekerke touched third in 57.13.<\/p>\n
Louve Boits won the women’s 400-meter free in 4:23.81, just touching out Czech’s Tereza Zavadova (4:23.88) in the process. Nathalie Bynens placed third in 4:24.97. Ken Cortens edged Lander Hendrickx, 3:54.58 to 3:54.97, in the men’s 400-meter freestyle finale. Belarus’ Uladzimir Zhyharau finished third in 3:55.26.<\/p>\n
