ANTWERP, Belgium, May 2. ALTHOUGH the Belgium Open Championships might not have the same depth as many of the other meets this month, it certainly can boast some strong top-end swims out of Antwerp.<\/p>\n
Belarus’ Aliaksandra Herasimenia rocketed to ninth in the SwimVortex world rankings in the women’s 50-meter fly with a winning time of 26.27. Meanwhile, Belgium’s Kimberly Buys took second in 26.42, just off her 10th-ranked season best of 26.35 from the Flanders Cup. Maaike Ramael wound up third in 27.38. Francois Heersbrandt moved to a 16th-ranked tie in the men’s 50-meter fly rankings with a winning time of 23.85. Czech’s Jan Sefl placed second tonight in 24.08, while Gilles De Wilde place third in 24.24.<\/p>\n
Fanny Lecluyse toplined the women’s 50-meter breaststroke with a 31.63, while Kim Janssens (32.55) and Luana De Raeve (33.95) placed second and third. Belarus’ Yury Klemparski followed up with a 28.41 to win the men’s 50-meter breast. Jonas Coreelman (28.69) and Dieter Ruijten (29.01) comprised the rest of the top three.<\/p>\n
Instead of being in Berlin to compete at long course nationals, Martina Van Berkel topped the women’s 200-meter back here at the open meet with a 2:16.42. Nele Laureys (2:18.49) and Laura Stevens (2:19.88) battled as the top swimmers from Belgium in the event.<\/p>\n
Emmanuel Vanluchene clipped Pieter Timmers, 1:48.41 to 1:48.82, for the win in the men’s 200-meter freestyle, while Louis Croenen earned third overall in 1:48.86. Czech’s Pavel Janecek claimed the men’s 400-meter IM with a 4:24.41, while Thomas Dal (4:28.66) posted the top time out of Belgium with a second-place effort. Logan Vanhuys rounded out the podium with a 4:30.04.<\/p>\n
Another Belarussian picked up a title as Aksana Dziamidava won the women’s 200-meter free in 2:03.82. Belgium’s Nathalie Bynens took second in 2:04.03 with Switzerland’s Noemi Girardet snagging third in 2:05.02. Lander Hendrickx won the men’s 200-meter back in 2:00.70. Nils Van Auderkerke (2:01.57) and Andrei Dabrysta of Belarus (2:05.64) touched second and third. Barbora Zavadova of Czech took the women’s 400-meter IM in 4:45.13 with Van Berkel earning her second podium of the night in 4:48.23. Jolien Vermeylen took third in 4:55.32.<\/p>\n
Edith Mattens smashed the field in the women’s 800-meter free with an 8:56.31 for the win, while Louve Boits posted a second-place 9:11.62. Julie Cnockaert wound up third in the distance event in 9:17.95. Wesley Joris followed with a 16:06.83 to win the men’s 1500-meter free.
