BUDAPEST, Hungary, April 20. OVER four days at the Budapest Open, some of the Hungary\u2019s best put up some crucial in-season racing in preparation for this summer\u2019s European championships. Many of the top names won multiple events, some of them getting into the top 10 of the world rankings.<\/p>\n
The meet did not feature two of the best the country has to offer: world champions Katinka Hosszu and Daniel Gyurta. But plenty of other big names were on hand to give a glimpse into what will be shown in August at Europeans in August.<\/p>\n
Laszlo Cseh, multiple Olympic medalist, won three events. On the second day of the meet, he posted a 52.44 in the 100 fly, the event in which he won a surprise silver medal last summer at the world championships. The other two events were in events in which he won silver medals in the Beijing Olympics behind Michael Phelps. He took the 200 fly in 1:56.86, good for 10th in the world, then won the 200 IM in 2:01.26.<\/p>\n
Evelyn Verraszto did Cseh one better, winning four events in the final three days of the meet. A 55.57 in the 100 free and 29.57 in the 100 back on the second and third days of the meet were just prelude to a double on the final day. Her first of two wins came in the 100 fly with a 59.22, followed by a 1:58.84 in the 200 free.<\/p>\n
Peter Bernek also put up a time that got him into the top 10 of the world rankings, with his 1:56.79 in the 200 back fifth in the world to stand as the top European so far this year. Bernek also won the 200 free with a 1:48.21 and the 100 back in 55.12.<\/p>\n
Anna Stankovics swept the women\u2019s breaststroke events, taking the 50 breast (32.08), 100 breast (1:09.44), 200 breast (2:29.27). Another triple winner on the women\u2019s side was Melinda Novoszath, who took the distance freestyles with a 4:14.59 in the 400, 8:42.80 in the 800 and 17:16.41 in the 1500.<\/p>\n
Other multiple winners at the meet included:<\/p>\n
David Verraszto: 200 IM (2:13.33) and 400 IM (4:14.47)<\/p>\n
Gergo Kis: 400 free (3:53.47) and 800 free (7:57.49)<\/p>\n
Liliana Szilagyi: 50 fly (27.18) and 200 fly (2:09.57)<\/p>\n
Reka Gyorgy: 200 IM (2:15.55) and 400 IM (4:48.69)<\/p>\n
David Horvath: 50 breast (29.02, tied with Tamas Szabo) and 100 breast (1:02.49)<\/p>\n
Seven others each won one event in Budapest.<\/p>\n
Krisztian Takacs took the men\u2019s 50 free with a 22.59, while Peter Holoda won the 100 free in 50.27. Sarah Joo won the women\u2019s 100 back in 1:03.09 and Kata Burian won the 200 back in 2:13.09. Gergely Gyurta posted a 15:06.57 to win the men\u2019s 1500 freestyle, while Bence Pulai (50 fly: 24.37) and Gabor Balog (50 back: 25.96) won sprint events.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
