GLASGOW, Scotland, April 16. SCOTLAND could be at or near the top of the swimming medals table at July\u2019s Commonwealth Games, based on the roster released today of 37 athletes who will perform in front of the home crowd in July in Scotland.<\/p>\n
Scotland won five medals at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, including gold by Hannah Miley in the 400 IM and Robbie Renwick in the 200 free. Miley and Renwick are returning to defend their titles after achieving their qualifying times at the Scottish nationals earlier this month.<\/p>\n
Michael Jamieson is another gold medal hopeful, coming into the meet as the current world leader in the 200 breast. Jamieson, who was second in the 200 breast at the 2010 Games, will have Australia\u2019s Christian Sprenger to contend with in the meet. <\/p>\n
Dan Wallace was a finalist at the world championships last year in the 400 IM and will rely on that experience when racing swimmers from England, Australia and South Africa in that event. He\u2019s also entered in the 400 free and 200 IM, other events in which he could find himself in the medal hunt.<\/p>\n
Ross Murdoch is on the verge of gold medal possibilities in the sprint breaststrokes after racing strong at the Scottish nationals and British nationals this month. Murdoch will be competing in his first Commonwealth Games and will have Sprenger and South Africa\u2019s Cameron van der Burgh to race in Glasgow.<\/p>\n
Caitlin McClatchey will make her third appearance at the Commonwealth Games, looking to get back on the medal podium after winning gold in the 200 and 400 freestyles in 2006. She was unable to reach the final of an individual event in 2010 and left with no medals.<\/p>\n
Scotland won silver in the men\u2019s 800 free relay in 2010, and the Scots could earn another medal this summer with the help of Wallace, Renwick, Gareth Mills and Jak Scott.<\/p>\n
The swimming portion of the Commonwealth Games runs July 24-29.<\/p>\n
