EINDHOVEN, The Netherlands, April 12. ALTHOUGH it isn’t a full blown nationals, the Eindhoven Cup is still producing some incredible times out of The Netherlands. Tonight, a pair of top-ranked efforts were clocked at the meet.<\/p>\n
Joeri Verlinden vaulted to the top of the SwimVortex world rankings in the men’s 100-meter fly with a 52.03 for the win. Evgeny Korotyshkin finished a distant second in 53.57 with Daniel Steen Andersen taking third in 53.78.<\/p>\n
Jennie Johansson bettered her top-ranked time of 30.84 in the women’s 50-meter breast with a 30.73 for the win tonight, while Moniek Nijhuis joined her under 31 seconds with a 30.93 for second. That put her fourth in the world rankings. Rikke Moller Pedersen placed third in 31.08.<\/p>\n
Velimir Stjepanovic grabbed seventh in the world rankings with a 1:46.87 for the win in the men’s 200-meter free, while Sebastiaan Verschuren posted a second-place time of 1:47.21 to just miss the top 10 in the world. Dion Dreesens snared third in 1:47.79. Caba Siladji captured the men’s 50-meter breaststroke crown in 27.50 for seventh in the world rankings, while Ioannis Karpouzlis (27.77) and Hendrik Feldwehr (27.95) took second and third in the sprint breast event.<\/p>\n
Faroe Islands’ Pal Joensen cruised to victory in the men’s 1500-meter freestyle this evening with a 15:19.20, while Maarten Brzoskowski placed a distant second in 15:26.21. David Brandl rounded out the top three in 15:36.81.<\/p>\n
Franziska Hentke nearly moved into the top 10 in the world with a 2:08.90 to win the women’s 200-meter fly. Meanwhile, Sharon van Rouwendaal took second in 2:10.02 to chop more than two seconds off the Dutch national record of 2:12.33 set by Conny van Bentum way back in 1988. That was the oldest Dutch record in the books. Claudia Hufnagl earned third in 2:14.19. Van Rouwendaal returned in the women’s 400-meter freestyle to win the event in 4:09.18, while Esmee Vermeulen took second in 4:13.29. Rieneke Terink snagged third in 4:14.67.<\/p>\n
In semifinal action, Sarah Sjostrom became just the second swimmer under 53 seconds in the women’s 100-meter free this year with a 52.93. Only Cate Campbell has been faster with a 52.68.
