RICCIONE, Italy, April 10. A pair of spectacular swims headlined this evening’s Italian Spring Nationals in Riccione. Stefanie Pirozzi put up a top-three time in the world in the women’s 400-meter IM, while Federica Pellegrini followed up a 200 back win with an astonishing anchor in the 800 free relay.<\/p>\n
Pirozzi vaulted to third in the SwimVortex world rankings in the women’s 400 IM with a top time of 4:36.75 for the win. Only Aimee Wilmott (4:33.64) and Hannah Miley (4:35.48) have been faster so far this year. Luisa Trombetti took second in 4:43.82, while Susanna Negri claimed third in 4:47.58.<\/p>\n
After posting a European record in the 800-meter free to open the meet, Gabriele Detti returned tonight to win the men’s 400-meter free in 3:48.02. That pushed him to eighth in the world rankings in the middle distance event. Gregorio Paltrinieri (3:48.41) and Samuel Pizzetti (3:49.38) placed second and third.<\/p>\n
Former Swimming World World Swimmer of the Year Federica Pellegrini continued her resurgent meet this week with a 2:09.27 to win the women’s 200-meter backstroke. That swim moved her to fifth in the world in the distance dorsal event. Carlotta Zofkova placed second in 2:10.93 with Ambra Esposito placing third in 2:11.81.<\/p>\n
Christopher Ciccarese tied Xu Jiayu for seventh in the world in the men’s 200-meter back with a 1:57.21 for the win, while Luca Mencarini touched second in 1:57.72. Mattia Aversa picked up third overall in 1:59.13.<\/p>\n
Ilaria Bianchi jumped to ninth in the world rankings in the women’s 100-meter fly with a 58.27 for the win tonight. Silvia Di Pietro (58.70) and Elena Di Liddo (59.07) earned second and third in the finale.<\/p>\n
Piero Codia took down the field in the men’s 50-meter fly with a time of 23.85, while Luca Dotto finished second in 24.06. Paolo Facchinelli rounded out the top three in 24.11.<\/p>\n
A pair of relays closed out the evening as GS Fiamme Oro Roma’s Luca Leonardi (49.59), Stefano Pizzamiglio (49.26), Nicola Febbraro (50.67) and Marco Orsi (48.37) picked up the men’s 400-meter free win in 3:17.89.<\/p>\n
C. Canottieri Aniene followed with a foursome of Rachele Ceracchi (2:03.20), Giulia De Ascentis (2:02.97), Aurora Ponsele (2:00.56) and Federica Pellegrini (1:57.25) cruised to victory in the women’s 800-meter free relay with an 8:03.98. Pellegrini’s anchor proved to be an absolutely amazing feat as she entered the water trailing GS Fiamme Oro Roma’s squad, 6:01.27 to 6:06.73.
