Gose Lining Up In Dublin"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Dan Wiffen Seeks To Inspire At LEN European U23 Championships: McSharry, Sates, Chmielewski &amp; Gose Lining Up In Dublin<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Dan Wiffen<\/strong> is looking to secure silverware while inspiring a new generation at the inaugural<strong> LEN European U23 Championships <\/strong>which run from 11-13 August in Dublin.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/results-ws.microplustimingservices.com\/U23DUBLIN\/index_web.php\">Link to results<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The 22-year-old arrives in the Irish capital less than a fortnight after the conclusion of the <strong>World Championships<\/strong> in Fukuoka where he was fourth in the 800 and 1500 free, narrowly missing out on becoming the first Irish swimmer to win a world long-course medal.<\/p>\n<p>The Tokyo Olympian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/world-championships-dan-wiffen-writes-his-name-in-the-european-record-books-once-more-in-the-800-free\/\">set a European record of 7:39.19<\/a> in the 800 to add to his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/daniel-wiffen-becoming-european-record-holder-making-irish-swimming-history-under-the-trusting-eye-of-andi-manley\/\">continental standard of 7:25.96<\/a> in the short-course pool from December 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Wiffen\u00a0made history as the first able-bodied swimmer from Northern Ireland t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/commonwealth-games-in-search-of-rekindling-aussie-tradition-sam-short-mines-gold-in-1500-freestyle\/\">o win a Commonwealth swimming medal<\/a> when he claimed 1500 silver last year in Birmingham behind Australian <strong>Sam Short<\/strong> who finished one place ahead of him in Fukuoka.<\/p>\n<p>Wiffen &#8211; coached by <strong>Andi Manley<\/strong> in Loughborough &#8211; is one of around 400 swimmers who&#8217;ll take to the blocks at the U23 meet to be held for the first time at the\u00a0<strong>Sport Ireland: National Aquatics Centre.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He told LEN:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cI was very happy with some of my swims at the World Champs and I performed quite well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cI\u2019m not expecting PB\u2019s (personal bests) here, but wouldn\u2019t be surprised if they came; f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/world-championships-day-three-finals-ruta-meilutyte-reclaims-100-breast-world-title-10-years-later\/\">ifth in the 100 breaststroke at worlds<\/a> &#8211; and <strong>Ellen Walshe<\/strong>, who set a national record of 2:10.92 when finishing ninth in the 200IM in Japan.<\/p>\n<p>Polish swimmer <strong>Krzysztof Chmielewski<\/strong> &#8211; who won 200 fly silver behind <strong>Leon Marchand<\/strong> &#8211; European 400 free champion <strong>Isabel Gose <\/strong>of Germany<strong><em>, <\/em><\/strong>world junior <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/petar-mitsin-sets-wjr-of-344-31-in-400-free-at-european-juniors-lowers-mack-hortons-2014-mark\/\">400 free record holder <\/a><strong>Petar Mitsin <\/strong>(Bulgaria) and double European junior gold medallist\u00a0<strong>Leah Schlosshan<\/strong> (Great Britain) are among those lining up in Dublin.<\/p>\n<p>Athletes from the United States &#8211; including <a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usaswimming.org\/news\/2023\/07\/27\/rosters-set-for-2023-len-u23-championships\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">several NCAA champions<\/a> &#8211; and Zimbabwe will also join the line-up as well as South Africa for whom <strong>Pieter Coetze<\/strong> &#8211; who won 100 back gold among three medals at the 2022 Commonwealth Games &#8211; and <strong>Matt Sates<\/strong>, 2022 world short-course 2IM champion, will compete.<\/p>\n<p>Walshe said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cOpening up the event to the USA and South Africa is a pretty good idea because it gets more (top) athletes here with good racing opportunities for everyone, so I\u2019m excited to get out against them and in front of the Irish fans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cSwimming (traditionally) isn\u2019t that big in Ireland, so hopefully having this meet in Dublin will bring the next generation along with us.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cHopefully it will motivate some of those coming to watch to take it up and follow what we\u2019re doing, so having them in the crowd will be amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dan Wiffen Seeks To Inspire At LEN European U23 Championships: McSharry, Sates, Chmielewski &amp;
