World Championships: Gretchen Walsh Inserted to U.S. Women’s Medley Relay for Fly (Full Medley Relay Lineups)<\/strong><\/p>\n

The United States women’s team has gone with a surprise lineup choice in the final event of the World Championships. A co-favorite with Australia in the women’s 400 medley relay, the Americans have picked Gretchen Walsh <\/strong>for the butterfly leg instead of 100 fly bronze medalist\u00a0Torri Huske<\/strong>. Huske struggled on the mixed 400 medley relay and split 57.42 in prelims, well off her top form, so Walsh, the eighth-place swimmer in the 100 fly and bronze medalist in the 50 fly, will take the leg instead.<\/p>\n

Walsh will join 100 backstroke silver medalist\u00a0Regan Smith<\/strong>, 100 breaststroke fourth-place finisher\u00a0Lilly King<\/strong> and 100 freestyle fourth-place finisher\u00a0Kate Douglass<\/strong>. King gets the nod over bronze medalist Lydia Jacoby<\/strong> thanks to having the quickest American time of the meet overall and her usual top form on relays.<\/p>\n

Australia, hoping to complete a sweep of the women’s relays, will have 100 back world champion\u00a0Kaylee McKeown<\/strong> and 100 free winner\u00a0Molie O’Callaghan<\/strong> going first and last. In between, veteran\u00a0Emma McKeon<\/strong> will handle fly but breaststroker\u00a0Abbey Harkin<\/strong> is a wildcard. Canada inserts\u00a0Kylie Masse<\/strong> onto the leadoff leg to join\u00a0Sophie Angus<\/strong> and\u00a0Maggie Mac Neil<\/strong> while\u00a0Summer McIntosh<\/strong> is added to anchor.<\/p>\n

China, a strong candidate for bronze, has Wen Letian<\/strong>,\u00a0Tang Qianting<\/strong>,\u00a0100 fly world champion\u00a0Zhang Yufei<\/strong> and\u00a0Cheng Yujie<\/strong> while Sweden sticks with Michelle Coleman<\/strong>,\u00a0Sophie Hansson<\/strong>,\u00a0Louise Hansson<\/strong> and\u00a0Sarah Sjostrom<\/strong>. Don’t count out the Netherlands, with 200 breast bronze medalist\u00a0Tes Schouten<\/strong> and 100 free bronze medalist\u00a0Marrit Steenbergen<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

On the men’s side, the United States goes with four individual medalists from their respective 100-meter events, with 100 back world champion\u00a0Ryan Murphy\u00a0<\/strong>leading into\u00a0Nic Fink<\/strong>,\u00a0Dare Rose<\/strong> and\u00a0Jack Alexy<\/strong>. China, considered the top challenger to the Americans, has\u00a0Xu Jiayu<\/strong>, triple breaststroke winner\u00a0Qin Haiyang<\/strong>,\u00a0Wang Changdao<\/strong> and\u00a0Pan Zhanle<\/strong> on its squad.<\/p>\n

Don’t count out France, swimming in between the U.S. and China with\u00a0Yohann Ndoye-Brouard<\/strong> moving into the leadoff spot with\u00a0Leon Marchand<\/strong>,\u00a0Maxime Grousset<\/strong> and\u00a0Hadrien Salvan<\/strong>. Australia has a strong back end with\u00a0Matt Temple<\/strong> and\u00a0Kyle Chalmers<\/strong> while out in lane eight, Great Britain anchors with 200 free world champion\u00a0Matt Richards<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Italy, the defending world champions in the race, did not qualify for the final.<\/p>\n
