{"id":533782,"date":"2023-07-26T19:12:33","date_gmt":"2023-07-27T02:12:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=533782"},"modified":"2023-07-26T19:12:33","modified_gmt":"2023-07-27T02:12:33","slug":"paige-madden-tops-800-free-at-tyr-pro-championships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/paige-madden-tops-800-free-at-tyr-pro-championships\/","title":{"rendered":"Paige Madden Tops 800 Free at TYR Pro Championships"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Paige Madden Tops 800 Free at TYR Pro Championships<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Many of the top American swimmers who did not qualify (or in some cases, attempt to qualify) for the World Championships <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/tyr-pro-championships-set-to-feature-top-americans-not-at-worlds-including-simone-manuel-michael-andrew-psych-sheet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">are racing this week in Irvine, Calif., at the TYR Pro Championships<\/a>. The next three days will feature prelims-finals racing following the NCAA Championships schedule and including relays, and the meet kicked off Friday night with the 800 freestyle and 800 free relay.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Paige Madden<\/strong>, a finalist in the 400 free at the 2021 Olympics and member of the silver-medal-winning 800 free relay at those Games, began the meet with a win in the women&#8217;s 800 free. Madden, a 24-year-old University of Virginia alum now representing the New York Athletic Club, finished in 8:32.46. Athens Bulldog&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Rachel Stege<\/strong> placed second in 8:34.75, with TAC Titans&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Caroline Pennington<\/strong> third (8:41.10).<\/p>\n<p>The men&#8217;s 800 free went to an Australian visitor as\u00a0<strong>Matthew Galea <\/strong>came in first in 7:50.25, followed by Sun Devil&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Daniel Matheson<\/strong> (7:52.34) and Wolfpack Elite&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Will Gallant<\/strong> (7:54.75).<\/p>\n<p>In the women&#8217;s 800 free relay, the Wisconsin Aquatics team of\u00a0<strong>Abby Carlson<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Phoebe Bacon<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Abby Wanezek<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Beata Nelson<\/strong> took the win in 8:01.99. Bacon and Nelson plus Alto Swim Club swimmers\u00a0<strong>Aurora Roghair<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Lillie Nordmann<\/strong> each recorded sub-2:00 splits.<\/p>\n<p>Australia&#8217;s men got the win in their relay in 7:12.75 behind <strong>Maximillian Giuliani<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Thomas Hauck<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>William Petric<\/strong> and Galea. Giuliani led off in 1:46.26, which was just one hundredth off\u00a0<strong>Kai Taylor&#8217;s<\/strong> winning time in the 200 free from Australian Trials last month, a race where Giuliani finished eight.
