The reigning Olympic silver medalist went 53.15 to pace a deep field at the Marine Messe Hall in Fukuoka, Japan.<\/p>\n<p>Not far back is the woman who bested her for gold in Tokyo,<strong> Emma McKeon.<\/strong> She posted the third-fastest time in 53.40, with <strong>Abbey Weitzeil<\/strong> in between at 53.40. <strong>Mollie O\u2019Callaghan,<\/strong> the 200 free champ, is through in seventh in 54.01.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/meet\/2023-world-aquatics-championships\">World Championships Meet Page<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.omegatiming.com\/2023\/world-aquatics-championships-sw-live-results\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Live Results<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It\u2019s the sprinters turn on the women\u2019s side, with the 100 free and 50 free looming in the meet\u2019s back half.<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Callaghan is fresh off the world record Wednesday night <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/mollie-ocallaghan-delivers-the-the-wow-factor-in-fukuoka-with-ariarne-titmus-gracious-in-defeat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in the women\u2019s 200 free en route to gold<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The world record holder in this event, <strong>Sarah Sjostrom<\/strong> of Sweden, is absent. She\u2019s limiting herself to the 50 butterfly, 50 free and relays.<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Callaghan, who won the event in 52.67 last year, is the only holdover medalist from Budapest. Five of the finalists from last year are absent \u2013 Sjostrom, <strong>Torri Huske<\/strong> (did not qualify), <strong>Penny Oleksiak<\/strong> (injury), <strong>Kayla Sanchez<\/strong> (nationality switch to Philippines) and <strong>Claire Curzan<\/strong> (dnq).<\/p>\n<p>Both Americans are through, <strong>Kate Douglass<\/strong> in 11th place in 54.41, a night after she picked up a bronze medal anchoring the mixed medley relay. China got two through, with <strong>Cheng Yujie<\/strong> eighth and <strong>Yang Junxuan<\/strong> 12th.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michelle Coleman<\/strong> was fifth in 53.72. <strong>Marrit Steenbergen,<\/strong> who has a daunting program in Fukuoka, came through sixth in 53.82. The home crowd roared in appreciation of <strong>Rikako Ikee,<\/strong> who was sixth in her heat in 54.67 but slid into the semifinal in 16th place, just behind<strong> Signe Bro.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Among those not advancing, <strong>Jillian Crooks<\/strong> of the Cayman Islands chopped a second off her personal best to go 55.32 from an unseeded heat.
