﻿{"id":532527,"date":"2023-07-17T22:42:42","date_gmt":"2023-07-18T05:42:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=532527"},"modified":"2023-07-17T23:01:52","modified_gmt":"2023-07-18T06:01:52","slug":"freya-anderson-seeks-to-continue-dave-mcnultys-legacy-as-he-returns-to-scene-of-coaching-bow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/freya-anderson-seeks-to-continue-dave-mcnultys-legacy-as-he-returns-to-scene-of-coaching-bow\/","title":{"rendered":"Freya Anderson Seeks To Continue Dave McNulty&#8217;s Legacy As He Returns To Scene Of Coaching Bow"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Freya Anderson Seeks To Continue Dave McNulty&#8217;s Legacy As He Returns To Scene Of Coaching Bow<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Freya Anderson<\/strong> was eight when <strong>Jo Jackson<\/strong> set the British 200 free record of 1:55.54 that still stands today.<\/p>\n<p>It was Jackson\u2019s first journey inside 1:56, back at the <strong>2009 World Championships<\/strong>, where she also set the current 400 standard of 4:00.60 before leaving Rome with two silvers and one bronze medal and just missing out in the 200 by one place.<\/p>\n<p>Fast-forward 14 years and Anderson too has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/live-british-championships-day-1-finals-first-spots-on-the-british-team-up-for-grabs-at-ponds-forge\/\">broken through the 1:56 barrier for the first time<\/a> when she clocked 1:55.89 at the British trials in April.<\/p>\n<p>The 22-year-old became the third British woman to go 1:55 after Jackson and <strong>Siobhan O\u2019Connor<\/strong> who went 1:55.82 en-route to silver at the <strong>2014 Commonwealth Games<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>And all of them coached by <strong>David McNulty<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Anderson told Swimming World:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cDave has so many stories about Joanne so I\u2019ve heard loads about how she trained and how it was at worlds and stuff so I am kind of clued up on it a bit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSiobhan was honestly ace, such a talented swimmer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was a real, real talent and one of the stars of British Swimming<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith Jo\u2019s record standing for so long it&#8217;s nuts \u2013 I don\u2019t know. I know some girls are getting rid of individual swims for the relays.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I think that does also come from what we\u2019ve seen the boys do and what we\u2019ve been told we are capable of so yeah, I\u2019m quite excited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had a relay meeting when we were on camp in France: we\u2019ve taken so much inspiration from the boys and how well their relays have gone and where they started from and where they\u2019ve got it to.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>No British woman has stood on an individual global long-course podium since Carlin in the 800 at Rio 2016.<\/p>\n<p>Anderson \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/world-championships-yuan-junxuan-edges-out-mollie-ocallaghan-for-200-freestyle-gold-china-finishes-1-3\/\">who was fourth in the 200 free at the Budapest worlds last year<\/a> &#8211; believes she\u2019ll have to do a PB to reach the final and predicts a 1:53 to make the podium with <strong>Mollie O\u2019Callaghan<\/strong> and <strong>Summer McIntosh<\/strong> having already entered the territory this year.<\/p>\n<p>She said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWhen I came to Bath we got given these laminated sheets of paper that we keep in our kit bag of goal times and mine had always been 1:54.5.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo anytime we\u2019d do pace work in the sessions I\u2019d be hitting the pace for a 1:54. So it kind of makes me slightly self-confident that I can do those times in training so that it will correlate to a race.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow that I\u2019ve got into the 1:55s I really want to get it
