Photo Courtesy: Becca Wyant<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Fast forward four years and only Guy and Scott of that triumphant quartet will compete in Fukuoka.<\/p>\n<p>Greenbank <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/world-championships-ryan-murphy-claims-200-back-world-title-for-first-time-greenbank-casas-on-rostrum\/\">won 200 back silver<\/a> in the Hungarian capital <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/olympics-evgeny-rylov-completes-backstroke-double-ryan-murphy-luke-greenbank-question-clean-sport\/\">a year after Olympic bronze<\/a> but didn\u2019t qualify from this year\u2019s British trials.<\/p>\n<p>Peaty <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/adam-peaty-withdraws-from-world-championship-trials-to-continue-focus-on-mental-health-recovery\/\">withdrew to focus on his mental health recovery<\/a> after which he spoke of having been on a self-destructive spiral.<\/p>\n<p>Three golds among a four-medal Olympic haul plus eight world, 16 European and four Commonwealth titles, Peaty\u2019s impact on the sporting landscape in Britain and beyond is immense.<\/p>\n<p>Scott became Britain\u2019s most-decorated athlete at a single Olympics when he won four medals, including 4&#215;2 gold, in Tokyo.<\/p>\n<p>He acknowledged the hole left by Peaty\u2019s absence in and out of the pool, saying:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cPeaty\u2019s presence is a massive loss to the team: I think that\u2019d be the same as being a part of any team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBack-to-back Olympic champion \u2013 defending an Olympic title is pretty mad \u2013 16 European titles, the list goes on and what he has achieved on the worlds stage as well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo not have him around is a big blow but I wasn\u2019t at worlds last year and the 4&#215;1 medley guys \u2013 I was watching from afar and they delivered massively \u2013 they had no Peaty and they stepped up massively and managed to come away with a bronze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you have got someone like Peaty to make such a big differential \u2013 for the time that he can go &#8211; it was incredible to see those boys deliver a bronze medal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve got plenty of people willing to step in &#8211; (James) Wilby and Greg Butler on the team here \u2013 and from a Scottish perspective, Archie (Goodburn) swam great at trials which is good to see.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Peaty last competed on the international stage at the 2022 short-course worlds and it\u2019s unclear when he\u2019ll return to racing.<\/p>\n<p>Scott looked forward to that day while also pointing to people becoming accustomed to Peaty\u2019s sustained trail-blazing excellence, so much so that it became an expectation rather than a cause for celebration.<\/p>\n<p>He said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI\u2019d like to think I speak for everyone when we hope that it\u2019s not going to be long until we see him \u00a0back at his best, back enjoying the sport, back competing and back dominating.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo it\u2019s been really special, I think we got used to it a little bit too much.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn Britain we started playing it down, seeing the successes week-in, week-out or each year, him dominating internationally.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were just kind of so relaxed and cool about it. You don\u2019t see things like that in sport at all so for him to do it for so long is quite special.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo hopefully we\u2019ll see him back to his best within the next 12 months.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>Lessons Of Kazan &amp; &#8220;Leader&#8221; James Guy<\/h3>\n<p>Scott missed last year\u2019s worlds as he recovered from Covid and in August was diagnosed with an IgE deficiency which affects the immune system for which he was prescribed antibiotics leading to the longest period of good health for years.<\/p>\n<p>In Fukuoka, the 26-year-old <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/duncan-scott-to-focus-solely-on-200im-in-fukuoka-due-to-100-free-scheduling-clash-looks-forward-to-maiden-meeting-with-leon-marchand\/\">has a solo mission in the 200IM<\/a> \u2013 plus relays &#8211; in which he won silver in Tokyo having dropped the 100 free because of a scheduling clash while failing to qualify in the 200 at trials.<\/p>\n<p>Awaiting in the short medley will be defending champion <strong>Leon Marchand<\/strong> who Scott will face for the first time plus Olympic champion <strong>Wang Shun<\/strong> and British teammate<strong> Tom Dean<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>There he&#8217;ll be looking to add to the single individual medal he has won at world titles, four years after bronze in the 200 free when he became the subject of the now-banned <strong>Sun Yang&#8217;<\/strong>s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/duncan-scott-joins-mack-horton-in-podium-protest-after-you-loser-rant-from-sun-yang\/\">explosive temper following the medal ceremony<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cFour years since my last worlds: I am looking forward to it, I\u2019m quite excited. Olympics is the last time I got to race a lot of these world-class athletes so I am buzzing to get my final preparations done and get head to head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel great: I\u2019ve kind of got that feeling of no fear which is quite exciting. Maybe doing one individual this year maybe isn\u2019t a bad thing at all and trying it out this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s something we\u2019ve always spoken about \u2013 will I feel fresher when it comes round to the 2IM and hopefully the later rounds in the 2IM? (Photo by Ian MacNicol\/Getty Images)\" width=\"328\" height=\"234\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-502523\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Duncan Scott &amp; Michael Phelps, Rio 2016: Photo Courtesy: Ian MacNicol, Scottish Swimming<\/p><\/div>\n<p>It will be Scott\u2019s fourth World Championships stretching back to <strong>Kazan 2015<\/strong> where he won gold in the 4&#215;2 having swum the heats before being replaced by Guy on anchor for the final, who guided the quartet from third to first.<\/p>\n<p>Scott recalled:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201c2015 was really special for me: my first World Champs and the way the team did it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just did the heat but it was a huge part of my journey because it was disappointment at not being part of a final team but also the realisation of how good this team is and what it could be the following year in 2016 and with its leader in Jimmy.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Since then Guy and Scott have shared a relay podium on four occasions at two Olympics \u2013 including 4&#215;2 gold in Tokyo \u2013 and five times at World Championships.<\/p>\n<p>It was Guy who called Scott as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/duncan-scott-wins-200-free-for-third-title-of-meet-as-james-guy-hails-a-skinnier-version-of-michael-phelps\/\">\u201ca skinnier version of Michael Phelps\u201d<\/a> with the latter pointing to the impact of the <strong>Bath Performance Centre<\/strong> swimmer who has been on the British team since the 2013 worlds.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cHe won the individual worlds in 2015 as well. I think he\u2019s been at the forefront of that \u2013 the success in the 4&#215;2.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou need to look at his relay splits alone just to tell you that but his consistency year in, year out \u2013 it\u2019s his 10<sup>th<\/sup> year on the 4&#215;2 which is pretty insane and pretty mad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe has been at the forefront for everything: he\u2019s led off, he\u2019s gone last, he\u2019s been in the engine room, he\u2019s kind of done it all. Bick<\/p><\/div>\n<p>He made his senior international bow at the <strong>2014 Commonwealth Games<\/strong>, where he was part of the Scottish 4&#215;2 team that won silver.<\/p>\n<p>Since then he\u2019s added seven Olympic medals, five at worlds, 11 European and 12 at Commonwealth Games to his creaking armoury.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a career of outstanding longevity and he gives \u201chuge credit\u201d to coach <strong>Steve Tigg<\/strong> at the University of Stirling.<\/p>\n<p>He told Swimming World:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI think we\u2019ve both got quite a long-term mindset in the way we like to visualise things, whether it\u2019s two or three years in advance or for prepping for a competition \u2013 it might not be the one right in front of us, it might be two or three tapers down the road.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d probably also say my ability to race is really high.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve not had great preparations into the competitions I\u2019ve had through bouts of illness that have kind of been the downfall of a lot of years in my career I would say.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I think no matter what shape I\u2019ve been in going into the competition, just the ability to stand up and race and kind of get the most out of me &#8211; because at the end of the day that\u2019s what I love about this sport, the competition element of it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would also say the manner of training we do, it\u2019s not all-in intensity every day and that makes it a little bit more manageable over almost 10 years now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been a number of things. I think the key thing that probably sits behind it all is that continuous learning \u2013 always trying to better myself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me, there\u2019s been quite a few surprises on the way \u2013 I didn\u2019t know I was capable of certain things &#8211;
