{"id":531813,"date":"2023-07-05T17:03:52","date_gmt":"2023-07-06T00:03:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=531813"},"modified":"2023-07-06T13:47:06","modified_gmt":"2023-07-06T20:47:06","slug":"greg-meehan-withdraws-from-u-s-coaching-staff-for-world-championships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/greg-meehan-withdraws-from-u-s-coaching-staff-for-world-championships\/","title":{"rendered":"Greg Meehan Withdraws from U.S. Coaching Staff for World Championships"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Greg Meehan Withdraws from U.S. Coaching Staff for World Championships<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Stanford women&#8217;s coach\u00a0<strong>Greg Meehan<\/strong> was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/united-states-team-and-coaching-staff-named-for-world-championships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">initially scheduled to travel to Fukuoka, Japan, as a member of the U.S. coaching staff for the World Championships<\/a>, but he chose to withdraw from the staff and focus on the upcoming college season. Meehan, the head coach of the U.S. women at the Tokyo Olympics and an assistant coach in 2016, helped\u00a0<strong>Torri Huske<\/strong> qualify for the Worlds team as the winner of the 100 butterfly, but he will remain at home during an offseason of change for the Cardinal.<\/p>\n<p>Meehan told\u00a0<em>Swimming World<\/em>, &#8220;I&#8217;ve been on my own for the last 6+ weeks, and with <strong>Katie<\/strong> (<strong>Robinson<\/strong>) still two weeks away from being on campus, it just doesn&#8217;t make sense for me to be gone for 3 weeks. This will allow me to catch up, getorganized with Katie when she arrives and be ready for the upcoming Olympic year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I called (USA Swimming National Team Managing Director) <strong>Lindsay\u00a0<\/strong>(<strong>Mintenko<\/strong>) on Monday, and she and (U.S. women&#8217;s head coach)\u00a0<strong>Carol<\/strong> (<strong>Capitani<\/strong>) and (U.S. men&#8217;s head coach)\u00a0<strong>Bob<\/strong> (<strong>Bowman<\/strong>) were very supportive.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In late May, longtime Stanford associate head coach\u00a0<strong>Tracy Slusser<\/strong> stepped down after working with Meehan for the past 11 seasons, and Robinson, the former head coach at Northwestern, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/katie-robinson-hired-as-new-associate-head-coach-for-stanford-women\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">will soon take the No. 2 spot on staff for one of the country&#8217;s top programs<\/a>.
