U.S. Nationals: Caeleb Dressel Into 100 Fly Final After Ryan Murphy Scratches<\/strong><\/p>\n

In his first A-final appearance of U.S. Nationals,\u00a0Caeleb Dressel<\/strong> improved from seventh in prelims to third in the final, and he will get another chance to show off some outside smoke with a World Championships spot up for grabs. Dressel was ninth in the 100 butterfly prelims, but thanks to\u00a0Ryan Murphy<\/strong> scratching, Dressel will now swim in lane eight in the 100 fly final.<\/p>\n

Murphy is already on the team in the 200 backstroke, and he will race the 100 back, an event where he holds the American record, Friday morning. Murphy and Dressel are old friends, having grown up together in Jacksonville, and now Dressel will be the beneficiary of Murphy’s decision to skip the final.<\/p>\n

The Thursday evening session, beginning at 7 p.m. ET, will begin with the 400 IM, where\u00a0Alex Walsh\u00a0<\/strong>is the top seed for the final ahead of World Championships silver medalist\u00a0Katie Grimes<\/strong><\/a>, with Olympic silver medalist\u00a0Emma Weyant<\/strong> absent from the field after a disqualification this morning.\u00a0Carson Foster<\/strong> holds lane four in the men’s event. He topped prelims comfortably<\/a> ahead of\u00a0Bobby Finke<\/strong>,\u00a0Jay Litherland<\/strong> and\u00a0Chase Kalisz<\/strong> despite cruising to the finish.<\/p>\n

Gretchen Walsh<\/strong> leads a tight field<\/a> in the women’s 100 fly ahead of\u00a0Torri Huske<\/strong>,\u00a0Kate Douglass<\/strong> and\u00a0Claire Curzan<\/strong>, and in the men’s event,\u00a0Dare Rose<\/strong> is the top seed by a half-second<\/a>, with\u00a0Shaine Casas<\/strong> bumped up to second after Murphy’s scratch. After a rough start to the week, Casas could get himself a spot in Fukuoka with another strong performance in the evening.<\/p>\n

Lilly King<\/strong><\/a> and\u00a0Nic Fink<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>each are the top seed for their respective 50 breaststroke races, with Fink earning lane four after\u00a0Max McHugh’s<\/strong> disqualification in the heats.\u00a0Katharine Berkoff<\/strong> could put a scare into her own American record<\/a> in the women’s 50 back, but\u00a0Regan Smith<\/strong> will be one lane over, and\u00a0Hunter Armstrong<\/strong> and\u00a0Justin Ress<\/strong> will go head-to-head<\/a> in the men’s 50 back.<\/p>\n
