U.S. Nationals: Dare Rose Edges Michael Andrew in 50 Fly Prelims; Dressel Qualifies for Final in Seventh<\/strong><\/p>\n

One spot at the World Championships will be on the line in the 50 butterfly, and Cal senior-to-be\u00a0Dare Rose<\/strong> will look to claim a spot on his first major international team after leading\u00a0Michael Andrew<\/strong> by two hundredths for the top seed in prelims. Rose finished in 23.16 to win the last heat of the event, just two hundredths ahead of Andrew’s 23.18 from two heats earlier.<\/p>\n

Andrew was the bronze medalist in the 50 fly at Worlds last year, winning his first individual medal at a major international long course meet, and he went on to earn bronze in the 50 breaststroke and silver in the 50 freestyle while covering the butterfly leg of the silver-medal-winning U.S. men’s 400 medley relay.<\/p>\n

Also claiming prime lanes in the evening field were\u00a0Ryan Held<\/strong>, who qualified third in 23.41, and the duo of Zach Harting\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Jonny Kulow<\/strong>, both of whom swam times of 23.62 for fourth. Held is likely qualified for Worlds after finishing fifth in the 100 free Tuesday evening while Harting placed third in the 200 fly.<\/p>\n

Indiana’s\u00a0Finn Brooks<\/strong> finished sixth in 23.76 while\u00a0Caeleb Dressel<\/strong> got into his first A-final of the meet with a seventh-place time of 23.79. Dressel, who was 29th in the 100 free prelims on the opening day of the meet before getting scratched into the C-final at night, swam a time of 23.79, one-and-a-half seconds off his own American record of 22.35. Dressel is the two-time defending world champion in the 50 fly, as it was the only individual event he swam to conclusion at last year’s Worlds.<\/p>\n

Auburn’s\u00a0Aidan Stoffle<\/strong> claimed eighth in 23.80, just edging Cal’s\u00a0Matthew Jensen<\/strong> (23.87) for the last spot racing in the top heat.<\/p>\n
