AMSTERDAM, April 26. WORLD-LEADING times were recorded by Dutch swimmers in both the women's and men's 50 meter freestyle as the Dutch National Long Course Championships and World Championship Trials opened in Amsterdam. While the women's result was by no means unexpected, the men's was a real shocker.<\/p>\n

The first two days of the annual championship also was highlighted by Thijs van Valkengoed's national record in the 200m breast with a time that qualified him to swim in Barcelona. <\/p>\n

In her first major meet this season, Inge de Bruin showed her talent once again. The triple Olympic champion is just back in training after moving to her new coach Fedor Hes, but posted a magnificent 50 free time of 24.80 seconds — fastest in the world this year.<\/p>\n

De Bruijn commented: "I hoped for a good time of course, but I didn\u2019t count on 24.80. It\u2019s probably the mental training of Paul Bergen in the US who I should attribute this to."<\/p>\n

Inky skipped the 100 fly, and is therefore not defending her World title in Barcelona.<\/p>\n

Other swimmers improved their personal bests here in the 100 fly, but breaking the one minute barrier to qualify for Barcelona is still one stroke too far. Chantal Groot came close, finishing first in 1:00.20, but Inge Dekker (1:00.33) and Marleen Veldhuis (1:00.76) also swam prs as they focus on qualifying for Athens. <\/p>\n

Veldhuis (25.38) and Groot (25.72) finished second and third behind Inky in the 50 free.<\/p>\n

Freestyle sprinter Johan Kenkhuis finally succeeded in qualifying for the Worlds in the 50 free, and he did it in spectacular fashion. He couldn\u2019t believe his eyes when the saw the 22.14 on the board.<\/p>\n

"Only seconds later did I realize that this was a very good time, and the cut for Barcelona,", said a delighted Kenkhuis of his world-leading time. <\/p>\n

Hinkelien Schreuder and Sander Ganzevles are the backstroke swimmers for the medley relay in Barcelona. Schreuder had no problem winning the 100 in 1:03.23. Ganzevles had competition from Klaas Erik Zwering, but took the win in 56.48 to his rivals' 56.77. <\/p>\n

Zwering qualified in the 200 with his prelim time of 2:00.39, but failed in the finals to break the two minute barrier. <\/p>\n

Thijs van Valkengoed set the only Dutch record thus far as he finally swam the 200 breast evereyone knew he was capable of swimming. The triple European Junior Champion in the breaststroke stroked to a superb 2:13.43 to earn his ticket to Spain in July.<\/p>\n

Pieter van den Hoogenband only participated in two of his minor events, taking gold in the 100 fly (53.56) and 400 freestyle (3:51.67). He thought about adding the fly to his program in Barcelona, but probably won\u2019t compete in this event since it might interfere with his normal schedule. <\/p>\n
