The meet will take place Friday through Sunday (June 23-25).<\/p>\n<p>Seven swimmers who won individual gold medals at last year&#8217;s Worlds in Budapest will be racing as they prepare to defend their titles. <strong>David Popovici<\/strong>, who won world titles in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/world-championships-david-popovici-adds-100-free-title-in-thrilling-race\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">100 freestyle<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/world-championships-david-popovici-sets-wjr-of-143-21-to-win-200-freestyle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">200 freestyle<\/a> last year before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/flash-david-popovici-sets-100-free-world-record-of-46-86\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">breaking the 13-year-old world record in the 100 free<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/flash-david-popovici-sets-200-free-textile-world-record-of-142-97-also-wjr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">becoming the third-fastest man ever in the 200 free<\/a>, will compete in his two main events.\u00a0<strong>Thomas Ceccon<\/strong>, the world-record breaker in the 100 backstroke, will be in action along with Italian countryman\u00a0<strong>Nicolo Martinenghi<\/strong>, and 50 free Worlds winner\u00a0<strong>Ben Proud<\/strong> will be in action. Hungary&#8217;s <strong>Kristof Milak<\/strong> was listed on the initial entry list, but he is unlikely to attend after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/kristof-milak-withdraws-from-world-championships-citing-mental-physical-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announcing his withdrawal from the World Championships<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For the women, 10-time individual world champion\u00a0<strong>Sarah Sjostrom<\/strong> highlights the 50 free, 100 free and 50 butterfly, and backstroker\u00a0<strong>Kylie Masse<\/strong>, last year&#8217;s world champion in the 50-meter race, and breaststroker <strong>Ruta Meilutyte<\/strong>, the resurgent world champion in the 50 breaststroke, will get some additional international experience in Rome. Those<\/p>\n<p><b>Tom Dean<\/b> and\u00a0<strong>Duncan Scott<\/strong>, the British pair who went 1-2 in the 200 free at the Tokyo Olympics, will face off against Popovici in the four lap race at Sette Colli, and they lead a strong contingent from their country that also includes <strong>Matt Richards<\/strong>, <strong>James Guy<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Lewis Burras<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>James Wilby<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Anna Hopkin<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Freya Anderson<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Abbey Wood<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Katie Shanahan<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Freya Colbert<\/strong>. The host-nation Italian team will include Ceccon, Martinengi, <strong>Simona Quadarella<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Gabriele Detti<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Lorenzo Mora<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Alberto Razzetti<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Margherita Panziera<\/strong>, <strong>Federico Burdisso<\/strong> and the breaststroke trio of\u00a0<strong>Benedetta Pilato<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Ariana Castiglioni<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Martina Carrarro<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tes Schouten<\/strong>, an emerging Dutch breaststroker who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/tes-schouten-lowers-dutch-200-breaststroke-record-to-221-71-first-voyage-inside-222\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ranks among the top swimmers in the world in her events this year<\/a>, will face off against the Italian swimmers, Meilutyte,\u00a0<strong>Reona Aoki<\/strong>, <strong>Sophie Hansson<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Mona McSharry<\/strong> in some loaded events. The men&#8217;s breaststroke events are no less competitive with Martinenghi and his Italian teammates\u00a0<strong>Federico Poggio<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Simone Cersauolo<\/strong> and <strong>Fabio Scozzoli<\/strong> racing Wilby, Dutch Olympic silver medalist <strong>Arno Kamminga\u00a0<\/strong>and Worlds silver medalist\u00a0<strong>Erik Persson<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The women&#8217;s freestyle events in Rome are fronted by Olympic silver medalist <strong>Siobhan Haughey<\/strong>, with Sjostrom, Hopkin, Anderson and\u00a0<strong>Marrit Steenbergen<\/strong> among the other big names in the 100 free.
