Photo Courtesy:Delly Carr Swimming Australia<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last year O\u2019Callaghan won the 100m freestyle world title beating Sweden\u2019s world record holder and four-time runner-up <strong>Sarah Sjostrom<\/strong> and finished second to China\u2019s <strong>Junxuan Yang<\/strong> in the 200m.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But when you have to race two Olympic champions in both of your main events just to secure a place on the team \u2013 your own Trials can sometimes be tougher and more daunting \u00a0than winning the World Championship.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was the second time in three days that the girl they call \u201cMollie O\u201d has beaten an Olympic champion just to make the Dolphins team for next month\u2019s World\u2019s in Fukuoka, Japan, such is the extraordinary depth in Australia\u2019s female freestyle sprinting stocks.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Thursday night it was Tokyo Olympic gold medallist, club mate <strong>Ariarne Titmus<\/strong> who fell to O\u2019Callaghan\u2019s powerhouse final turn and lethal six-beat kick in a neck-and-neck 200m freestyle final \u2013 shooting to the top of the world rankings.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tonight, it was the Tokyo Olympic 100m freestyle champion, <strong>Emma McKeon<\/strong> (Griffith University, QLD) who lost out to Mollie O\u2019s blistering finish, also clocking the fastest time in the world this year by just four-one-hundredths of a second.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 19-year-old stopped the clock in a personal best of 52.48 to McKeon\u2019s 52.52 with <strong>Shayna Jack<\/strong> (St Peters Western, QLD) another four-one-hundredths of a second behind in third in 52.64.<\/p>\n<p>There will now be strong 1-2s in the Dolphins female freestyle ranks with O&#8217;Callaghan and McKeon run the 100m, O&#8217;Callaghan in the 200m, Titmus and <strong>Lani Pallister<\/strong> in the 400 and 1500m and the 50 and 1500m to be determined on the final night.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And there was an air of confusion at the finish when the graphics on the venue big screen flashed up 2nd, 2nd 3rd but no 1st, the girls unsure who had actually won.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And when interviewed by two-time Olympian <strong>Matt Welsh<\/strong> after the race, O\u2019Callaghan admitted she had heard a loud click on her block when she dived in, believing she may have been disqualified.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI thought \u2018did I do something wrong\u2019\u2026? Did I get disqualified when I dived in?\u201d said O\u2019Callaghan.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI realised the block wasn\u2019t clicked in properly and I panicked because I heard the click.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI also had no idea what was going on in the last five metres; I just had to trust myself and believe I could try and touch that wall (first).<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI was breathing the other way and couldn\u2019t see the girls and I knew all the girls go out pretty fast and I\u2019m a bit different so as I said to myself, I just had to trust myself and trust the process.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><em>\u201cThe depth here (in Australia) is just incredible and it\u2019s always so close\u2026I really wanted to win but I just went into this thinking \u2018just try and make a relay and coach Dean Boxall said just try and get top two or the relay\u2026.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now Mollie O is good to go in the 100 and 200m freestyle and will be a key figure in so many of Australia\u2019s relays.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The standard of tonight\u2019s 100m freestyle final saw the 2022-23 World Rankings re-written again and this is how the Top Eight Rankings looks now:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Mollie O\u2019Callaghan (AUS) 52.48<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Siobhan Haughey (HKG) 52.50<\/li>\n<li><strong>Emma McKeon (AUS) 52.52<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Shayna Jack (AUS) 52.64<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Marrit Steenbergen (NED) 52.98<\/li>\n<li>Sarah Sjostrom (SWE) 52.99<\/li>\n<li><strong>Meg Harris (AUS) 53.09<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Yujie Cheng (CHN) 53.26<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Australia also has Marion, SA\u2019s <strong>Madi Wilson<\/strong> (53.42) in 10<sup>th<\/sup> and Chandler, QLD\u2019s <strong>Cate Campbell <\/strong>(who did not contest the Trials) in equal 12<sup>th<\/sup> on 53.52; Carlile NSW\u2019s 17-year-old Australian Age champion <strong>Olivia Wunsch<\/strong>(eighth in tonight\u2019s final) at 22<sup>nd<\/sup> in 54.05 (swum at the Age Championships) and Titmus (who has a pb of 53.68) sixth in the final in 54.26 and just outside the top 25.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile in other events tonight:<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Commonwealth Games<\/strong> champion <strong>Sam Short<\/strong> (Rackley Swim Team, QLD) who has already qualified in the 400 and 800m freestyle added his pet event \u2013 the 1500m &#8211;
