They greeted his news with love, support and acceptance. But no longer hiding that facet of his identity from the wider world was a process the University of Louisville graduate felt he needed to do.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the nerves of his public coming out, the 25-year-old <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/nick-albiero-etches-his-name-into-louisville-history-books-with-emotional-200-butterfy-ncaa-title\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NCAA champion<\/a> got a generally positive response. And his ability to live more authentically is something he hopes will benefit him <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/behind-the-beep-catching-up-with-u-s-national-team-member-nick-albiero\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in and out of the water on the road<\/a> to the Paris Olympics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt took me a while to feel free being myself,\u201d Albiero said this week <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teamusa.org\/News\/2023\/June\/16\/Swimmer-Nick-Albiero-On-Life-Before-And-After-Coming-Out\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in an interview with Team USA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One of the factors that helped was the fact that he didn\u2019t feel like such a trailblazer. While LGBTQ+ representation is lacking in swimming overall, he cited the example of <strong>Erica Sullivan<\/strong> making the Olympics in 2021 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/overcoming-tragedy-olympic-journey-of-erica-sullivan-brings-her-home-to-tokyo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">as the first out swimmer<\/a> on a U.S. Olympic swim team as easing the transition. \u201cShe broke the stigma that when you come out you don\u2019t perform as well in the pool,\u201d Albiero said, of the silver medalist in the 1,500 free in Tokyo and a standout at the University of Texas. (The two were teammates at World Juniors in 2017.)<\/p>\n<p>Albiero said his coming out has lessened pressure on him in many regards. (He echoes many of the points that <strong>Markus Thormeyer,<\/strong> a two-time Canadian Olympian, shared <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/olympic-spot-in-hand-markus-thormeyer-chasing-more-at-canadian-trials\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">about how his decision to come out affected his performance<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel less pressure,\u201d Albiero said, \u201cbecause I know a whole community supports me regardless of the outcome in the pool. Now I represent more than my team; I represent a community.
