AUSTIN, Texas, March 28. CHASE Kalisz knew he needed to work on his butterfly and backstroke after finishing second in the 400 IM at the world championships last summer, and that focus paid off tonight at the NCAA Men’s Division I Swimming and Diving Championships with an American record.<\/p>\n

In an interview with the media after the 400 IM, Kalisz talked about his conversation with Georgia coaches Jack Bauerle and Harvey Humphries that included staying away from training breaststroke and focusing on his weaknesses in the individual medley. That’s why, he said, he is not swimming the 200 breast this year and racing the 200 fly on the final day of the meet.<\/p>\n

Kalisz also talked about the feeling of being the fastest 400-yard IM swimmer in history, noting that he used to “beg Michael (Phelps) for autographs when I was 6 years old” and now he’s faster than the Greatest of All Time.<\/p>\n
