{"id":529116,"date":"2023-06-02T13:15:16","date_gmt":"2023-06-02T20:15:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=529116"},"modified":"2023-06-02T14:42:59","modified_gmt":"2023-06-02T21:42:59","slug":"umbc-faces-lawsuit-from-former-swimmers-alleging-school-ignored-covered-up-sexual-abuse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/umbc-faces-lawsuit-from-former-swimmers-alleging-school-ignored-covered-up-sexual-abuse\/","title":{"rendered":"UMBC Faces Lawsuit From Former Swimmers Alleging School Ignored, Covered Up Sexual Abuse"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>UMBC Faces Lawsuit From Former Swimmers Alleging School Ignored, Covered Up Sexual Abuse<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Six former swimmers have filed a lawsuit against the University of Maryland-Baltimore County (UMBC), alleging the university ignored and even covered up sexual harassment, abuse and discrimination by former head coach <strong>Chad Cradock,\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baltimoresun.com\/maryland\/baltimore-county\/bs-md-co-umbc-swimmers-lawsuit-cradock-20230601-7cf5nfhyxze2vdtdgewfemicki-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to a Baltimore Sun report<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Cradock resigned in 2020 as UMBC head coach and committed suicide in March of 2021.<\/p>\n<p>A university spokesperson said there also is an investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice that is ongoing, according to the Sun.<\/p>\n<p>The university <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/female-swimmer-sues-umbc-alleging-mishandling-of-abuse-claims\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">began looking into conduct by Cradock in 2020<\/a>. The final report, completed in July by an outside law firm found Cradock, \u201cengaged in sexual harassment and created a hostile environment, in violation of the university\u2019s discrimination policy.\u201d In addition to the report, swimmers were interviewed by investigators from the U.S. Department of Justice during the initial investigation.<\/p>\n<p>Among the findings was that Cradock engaged in inappropriate touching and harassment of members of the men\u2019s team while disengaging his attention from the women\u2019s team. The lawsuit filed this week involves the latter set of failures.<\/p>\n<p>This is the second lawsuit in regard to the situation. The first was filed by an unidentified female swimmer.
