{"id":529085,"date":"2023-06-01T08:08:13","date_gmt":"2023-06-01T15:08:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=529085"},"modified":"2023-06-01T08:20:48","modified_gmt":"2023-06-01T15:20:48","slug":"penny-oleksiak-withdraws-from-world-championships-with-injuries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/penny-oleksiak-withdraws-from-world-championships-with-injuries\/","title":{"rendered":"Penny Oleksiak Withdraws From World Championships With Injuries"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Penny Oleksiak<\/strong> will be withdrawing from this year\u2019s World Aquatics Championships due to injury.<\/p>\n<p>Canada\u2019s most decorated Olympian had been working her way back from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/penny-oleksiak-undergoes-surgery-for-meniscus-tear\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">left knee surgery<\/a> since August, during which time she has developed an unrelated left shoulder condition. She made it back to racing earlier this month, competing in the Barcelona leg of the Mare Nostrum tour. After Oleksiak&#8217;s swims there, she and High Performance Centre \u2013 Ontario Head Coach <strong>Ryan Mallette<\/strong> determined it would be best to focus on continued rehabilitation rather than compete at the world championships in Fukuoka, Japan, in July.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe bar that we set was, can she be as good as she\u2019s ever been at these world championships? We just don\u2019t feel like we\u2019re going to be ready to be 100 per cent yet this summer. Our focus is to get her back to 100 per cent as soon as possible to get ready for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games,\u201d Mallette said. \u201cPenny has done absolutely everything she can to recover and be ready to go this summer. Unfortunately, due to the timing we just aren\u2019t ready to get there yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Oleksiak was named to the team at the conclusion of the Bell Canadian Swimming Trials in the hope that she would be ready in time for worlds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSwimming at Mare Nostrum was a checkpoint for worlds and I gave it my best shot,\u201d Oleksiak said. \u201cWe reviewed my swims there and it showed me the level I want to get back to. Now I need to focus on my rehab to get back to where I want to be and put myself in position to be at my best next season.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimming.ca\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Swimming Canada<\/a> High Performance Director and National Coach <strong>John Atkinson<\/strong> said the organization will support Oleksiak in her plans to focus on rehabilitation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis allows her to put in place a more specific plan for rehab and training to put her in position to be ready to embark on the next season,\u201d Atkinson said. \u201cPenny is a world-class athlete.
