CALIFORNIA&#8217;s Ryan Murphy had some company with Penn State&#8217;s Shane Ryan serving as his rabbit through the 75, but Murphy had more than enough to win the men&#8217;s 100-yard back at the NCAA Division I Men&#8217;s Championships.<\/p>\n<p>Trailing Ryan 33.07 to 33.13, Murphy threw down an 11.50 to win the title in 44.63. That put him fourth on the all-time performers list, and just missed Ryan Lochte&#8217;s NCAA record of 44.60. Incidentally, Murphy&#8217;s time also beat his 44.91 relay leadoff in the 400 medley relay at the 17-18 U.S. National Age Group record.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That\u2019s been the goal all season, especially with how this meet has been going. I put a lot of pressure to perform well at that event for the team and I think we\u2019ve got a lot of momentum now going into this last relay and into tomorrow as well,&#8221; Murphy said. &#8220;For that race I just wanted to go out fast because I knew there was a bunch of really fast guys in that race. I just hoped that my 200 training would help me in that last 25.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ryan, meanwhile, had himself an epic race as well with a runner-up 44.78. that vaulted him to seventh all time in the event&#8217;s history. Texas&#8217; Kip Darmody raced his way to third in 45.03 to move into 14th overall.<\/p>\n<p>Stanford&#8217;s David Nolan, the defending champion, wound up fourth in 45.21 with West Virginia&#8217;s Bryce Bohman snaring fifth in 45.30.<\/p>\n<p>USC&#8217;s Luca Spinazzola (45.55), California&#8217;s Tony Cox (45.79) and Florida State&#8217;s Pavel Sankovich (46.44) also competed in the A final.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s just California&#8217;s third win in the event, as Murphy joins back-to-back winner Tom Shields (2011, 2012) as Golden Bear victors in the 100 back.<\/p>\n<p>Indiana&#8217;s James Wells won the B final in 45.90 with Penn State&#8217;s Nate Savoy placing second in 46.00.<\/p>\n<p>California&#8217;s Jacob Pebley (46.09), Texas&#8217; Aaron Gustafson (46.10), Georgia&#8217;s Taylor Dale (46.24), Arizona&#8217;s Mitchell Friedemann (46.54), Tennessee&#8217;s Sean Lehane (46.92) and Florida&#8217;s Jack Blyzunskyj (46.98) placed 11th through 16th overall.<\/p>\n<p><b>Splits<\/b><br \/>\n1 Murphy, Ryan FR California 45.08 44.63 20<br \/>\n10.51 21.73 (11.22)<br \/>\n33.13 (11.40) 44.63 (11.50)<br \/>\n2 Ryan, Shane SO Penn St. 45.75 44.78 17<br \/>\n10.57 21.58 (11.01)<br \/>\n33.07 (11.49) 44.78 (11.71)<br \/>\n3 Darmody, Kip JR Texas 45.60 45.03 16<br \/>\n10.63 21.88 (11.25)<br \/>\n33.28 (11.40) 45.03 (11.75)<\/p>\n<p><b>Team Standings<\/b><br \/>\n1.
