{"id":528636,"date":"2023-05-18T04:00:15","date_gmt":"2023-05-18T11:00:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=528636"},"modified":"2023-05-17T23:48:41","modified_gmt":"2023-05-18T06:48:41","slug":"olympic-silver-medalist-michael-jamieson-writes-about-anxiety-struggles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/olympic-silver-medalist-michael-jamieson-writes-about-anxiety-struggles\/","title":{"rendered":"Olympic Silver Medalist Michael Jamieson Writes About Anxiety Struggles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Olympic Silver Medalist Michael Jamieson Writes About Anxiety Struggles<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Michael Jamieson<\/strong> described it as \u201cthe beginning of the end.\u201d He was a week shy of his 24th birthday in 2012 when the native of Scotland won a silver medal at the London Olympics in the men\u2019s 200 breaststroke.<\/p>\n<p>But because of increasing struggles with anxiety, Jamieson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thescottishsun.co.uk\/sport\/10671986\/michael-jamieson-olympic-champ-medal-mental-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote this week in an essay for a Scottish newspaper<\/a>, the pressure that came with it eventually brought a premature end to his swimming career.<\/p>\n<p>Jamieson shared his struggles with mental health as part of Mental Health Awareness Month in May, focusing in particular on the anxiety brought upon by his successes in the pool.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe pressure I was putting on myself was unsustainable and it was really taking its toll,\u201d Jamieson wrote in <em>The Scottish Sun<\/em>. \u201cI couldn\u2019t stay healthy, psychologically, and there was no way I\u2019d be able to perform to my best ability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jamieson had a very productive stretch that began with silver in the 200 breast at the Commonwealth Games in 2010. He would go on to bronze and silver at successive European Short-Course Championships and silver at Short-Course Worlds in 2012. The eventual Scottish Swimming Hall of Famer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/2012-london-olympics-great-britains-michael-jamieson-posts-british-record-to-lead-200-breast-semis-kosuke-kitajima-threepeat-still-in-play-scott-weltz-clark-burckle-make-finals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">set British records at every stage<\/a> during the Games in London, then waged an epic battle with <strong>Daniel Gyurta<\/strong> in the final, the Hungarian beating him by .15 seconds and requiring a world record to do it.<\/p>\n<p>By the pressure of that accomplishment weighed so heavily on Jamieson that he was unable to be at his best for the 2016 Olympic qualification cycle, failing to earn a trip to the Rio Games. He retired that year at the age of 27.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/british-olympian-michael-jamieson-announced-as-laureus-ambassador\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Now a coach<\/a>, he\u2019s hopeful that sharing his experience can help others not feel the sense of isolation he did, in thinking he was the only one struggling.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile I was struggling with my mental health \u2014 the anxiety ahead of big competitions, the severe lows when I thought training wasn\u2019t going well \u2014 I didn\u2019t speak to anyone about how I was feeling or the effect it was having on me,\u201d he wrote. \u201cI swayed between the idea that all pro athletes had the same experiences and there wasn\u2019t any point making a big deal about it, to thinking I was all alone and no one else would understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a
