It\u2019s her first meet in nine months due to a succession of injuries starting with a knee meniscus tear.<\/p>\n<p>Oleksiak swam the women\u2019s 50 butterfly and 100 freestyle in the morning session of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/siobhan-haughey-goes-top-of-100-free-rankings-with-52-50-blast-in-barcelona-third-swiftest-of-her-career\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">what is officially the Trofeu Internacional Ciutat de Barcelona<\/a>, the two-day stop in the week-long tour of the Mediterranean. Oleksiak finished 16th in both, going 27.35 in the 50 fly and 56.08 in the 100 free. The latter time was even with fellow Olympic vet <strong>Signe Bro<\/strong> of Denmark; Oleksiak was fifth among a sizeable contingent of Canadians in action at the meet. Oleksiak scratched out of the B final of both events.<\/p>\n<p>Oleksiak is entered in the 50 free and 200 free <a href=\"https:\/\/competicions.natacio.cat\/2023\/TICB2023\/#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on Thursday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s been a long climb for Oleksiak, who dealt with a number of nagging injuries, including a recurrent back issue before the Tokyo Olympics. She <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/penny-oleksiak-undergoes-surgery-for-meniscus-tear\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tore the meniscus in her knee<\/a> while training for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/olympic-gold-medalist-penny-oleksiak-to-climb-mount-kilimanjaro-to-help-combat-hunger\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a charity climb of Mount Kilimanjaro last fall<\/a>. Her return to competition has been delayed a couple of times, including from January\u2019s TYR Pro Swim Series stop in Knoxville and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/penny-oleksiak-to-miss-canadian-swimming-trials-still-rehabbing-after-knee-surgery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bell Canadian Trials in March<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been recovering really quickly,\u201d Oleksiak said in an interview with the Canadian outlet, <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyhive.com\/vancouver\/penny-oleksiak-summer-mcintosh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Daily Hive<\/a>. \u201cWe\u2019ve kind of just been taking our time with it just because the Olympics are still over a year away. So I have a lot of time to prepare for it. But we just want to make sure that these injuries are going to recover fully and not come back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/penny-oleksiak-taylor-ruck-named-to-canadas-world-championship-team\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">still selected to swim at the World Championships<\/a> in Fukuoka this summer for Canada. Oleksiak is the most decorated Canadian Olympian in history, with seven Olympic medals, including gold in the women\u2019s 100 free at the Rio Games. Amazingly, she still doesn\u2019t turn 23 until next month.<\/p>\n<p>Oleksiak remains a major player in Canada\u2019s relay rosters. With the growth of <strong>Maggie MacNeil<\/strong> over 100 meters and <strong>Summer McIntosh<\/strong> over 200, both freestyle relays are likely medal contenders internationally, especially if Oleksiak returns to Olympic-final caliber.<\/p>\n<p>The growth of McIntosh <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/summer-mcintosh-wraps-up-historic-canadian-trials-with-200-free-wjr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">into a world-record holder in recent months<\/a> is something Oleksiak has enjoyed watching.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love that there\u2019s someone that fast in Canada, because it gives me someone that I can really strive to, like, push myself and see how fast I can get and in turn, it\u2019s going to help her and she\u2019s going to help me,\u201d she said. \u201cThe faster we both get, we can just see how fast Canada can get, which is fun.
