Sixteen-time University of Georgia All-American swimmer and former United States national team member Michael Norment<\/strong> has been named the school\u2019s men\u2019s swimming and diving associate head coach, as announced by head coach Neil Versfeld<\/strong> Tuesday morning.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am honored to join the coaching staff at the University of Georgia and return home to Athens,\u201d Michael Norment said. \u201cThis institution is very important to me, and I am excited for the opportunity to mentor and guide the next generation of Bulldogs. My family and I are grateful for Neil\u2019s confidence in me, and I cannot wait to begin helping this program achieve even greater heights. I also want to thank Courtney Shealy Hart<\/strong> for giving me the chance to coach at Georgia Tech. Without her, I would not have been able to return home to Georgia.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI am excited to welcome Michael Norment back home to Georgia,\u201d Versfeld said. \u201cHe is an amazing coach and incredible person that shares the same vision I have for our program. We are both deeply committed to helping these young men reach their full potential as we continue to strive for excellence.\u201d<\/p>\n

Michael Norment returns to Athens after serving as an assistant coach at Georgia Tech the past five seasons, including the 2018-19 campaign alongside Versfeld. During his time with the Yellow Jackets, Norment helped produce six individual ACC swimming championships, with seven-time All-American Caio Pumputis<\/strong> winning three titles and the 2019 ACC Championships Co-MVP Award. Georgia Tech scored at each of the last four NCAA Men\u2019s Championships, including 21^{st<\/sup>-place finishes in 2021 and 2022, along with two scoring performances by the women\u2019s team. Norment\u2019s swimmers have also excelled on the international stage, most notably Georgia product Nic Fink,<\/strong> who began training with Norment in fall 2021. In that time, Fink has won 16 combined medals at the FINA\/World Aquatics Long Course and Short Course World Championships, including nine gold medals. Pumputis represented his native Brazil at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, competing in the 200-meter individual medley and 100-meter breaststroke.<\/p>\n

Michael Norment is also the founder of the Metro Atlanta Aquatic Club (MAAC) and co-founder of the Swim with a Purpose Swim School. Prior to founding MAAC, he served as a coach at DeKalb Aquatics for eight years. In his time at MAAC, Norment coached future NCAA champion and World University Games gold medalist Dean Farris, who won two NCSA Junior National championships and a pair of Georgia high school state titles as well.<\/p>\n

Michael Norment, a native of Hempstead, New York, left a remarkable legacy during his career at Georgia, swimming under legendary head coach Jack Bauerle. Norment earned 16 All-America citations during his career, tied for the ninth-most in program history. He helped the Bulldogs finish third at the 1997 NCAA Championships, the highest men\u2019s team finish in program history. As a freshman in 1994, he won the SEC title in the 100-yard breaststroke, before later winning three more individual silver medals. After earning a spot on the 1992 U.S. Junior National Team, he was twice named to the USA Swimming National Team (1997-98) and competed for Team USA at two Pan-Pacific Championships. In 1998, he finished the international year ranked fifth in the world in the 100-meter breaststroke.<\/p>\n

Following his collegiate career, Michael Norment graduated from the University of Georgia in 1998 with a bachelor\u2019s degree in education. Norment and his wife, Nay, have two children: daughter, Assata Rose, and son, Mozi.<\/p>\n
