Maurer won the event in 4:12.70, edging the mark of 4:12.87 that Shoults posted seven years ago.<\/p>\n<p>In 2022, Maurer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/rex-maurer-posts-413-500-freestyle-among-three-wins-at-cif-southern-section-championships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">swam a time of 4:13.90 on the high school circuit<\/a>, and in December at U.S. Junior Nationals, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/maximus-williamson-beats-andrews-former-nag-record-in-200-im-at-juniors-west-rex-maurer-shines-in-500-free\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he posted a mark of 4:12.33 to tie the best 18-and-under time ever recorded by <strong>Michael Phelps<\/strong><\/a>. Back in high school swimming, Maurer finally got under the mark at his final CIF meet. Maurer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/rex-maurer-continues-family-legacy-with-commitment-to-stanford\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">will begin college career this fall at Stanford<\/a>, the same university Shoults competed for, and the former record holder was quick to offer his congratulations.<\/p>\n<div class=\"oembed-wrap\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">With only the 4th guy to hold the 500 record since Kostoff broke it in 1983, it&#39;s an absolute pleasure to see you capture the record Rex. Congrats Rex! <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/vUSbJrLnfb\">https:\/\/t.co\/vUSbJrLnfb<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; grantshoults (@grantshoults) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/grantshoults\/status\/1654678946468999168?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 6, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>Prior to his standout performance in the 500 free, Maurer also won the 200 free in 1:33.54, less than a second off <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/carmels-aaron-shackell-lowers-national-high-school-record-in-200-freestyle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the overall high school record of 1:32.85 set by Carmel&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Aaron Shackell<\/strong> earlier this year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Also posting a standout performance Friday was Santa Margarita&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Teagan O&#8217;Dell<\/strong>, who posted wins in the 200 IM and 100 backstroke. O&#8217;Dell swam a time of 1:54.75 in the 200 IM final after blasting a remarkable 1:54.07 in Wednesday&#8217;s prelims. That time is already ahead of what it took to qualify for the NCAA A-final this year, and O&#8217;Dell is just a sophomore.
