A Look At the Contenders (Vote In Comments)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Who Will Win the Men&#8217;s 100 Freestyle at the World Championships?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The men&#8217;s 100 freestyle has long been considered the blue-ribband of swimming, and when the best swimmers in the world gather to race the event this July in Fukuoka, Japan, look for a showdown between some of the most prominent figures in the sport. The headliner is <strong>David<\/strong> <strong>Popovici<\/strong>, the Romanian teenager who captured world titles in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/world-championships-david-popovici-sets-wjr-of-143-21-to-win-200-freestyle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">200 free<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/world-championships-david-popovici-adds-100-free-title-in-thrilling-race\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">100 free<\/a> last year before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/flash-david-popovici-sets-100-free-world-record-of-46-86\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">breaking a 13-year-old world record in the 100 free at the European Championships in August<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Popovici will be favorited to defend his title, but his competition could include the Olympic champion and winner of the two previous world titles, <strong>Caeleb<\/strong> <strong>Dressel<\/strong>. The American has not competed since pulling out early from last year&#8217;s World Championships, but he is the only other active swimmer to break 47, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/caeleb-dressel-set-for-return-to-competition-at-next-weeks-atlanta-classic-first-meet-in-11-months\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he is scheduled to make his 2023 racing debut next week at the Atlanta Classic<\/a>. Certain to be in the race is Australia&#8217;s <strong>Kyle Chalmers<\/strong>, Dressel&#8217;s longtime rival and the 2016 Olympic gold medalist in the event. Chalmers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/seven-years-after-olympic-gold-kyle-chalmers-on-the-hunt-in-100-freestyle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has recorded some of his best-ever swims in recent years<\/a>, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/world-championships-day-three-mens-finals-kyle-chalmers-wins-100-free-in-cr-wjr-for-popovici\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a short course world title<\/a> in the event in December.<\/p>\n<p>The best swimmer in the world so far this year is China&#8217;s <strong>Pan<\/strong> <strong>Zhanle<\/strong>, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/pan-zhanle-blasts-47-22-to-set-asian-record-in-the-mens-100-freestyle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recorded an Asian-record time of 47.22 at his country&#8217;s national championships this week<\/a>. Also worth watching are 2022 Worlds medalists <strong>Maxime Grousset<\/strong> (France) and <strong>Joshua Liendo<\/strong> (Canada), the latter of whom became the second-fastest man ever in the 100-yard free at the NCAA Championships in March.<\/p>\n<p>Who will come out on top when medals are on the line at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldaquatics.com\/competitions\/1\/20th-fina-world-championships-fukuoka-2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">World Championships<\/a>?
