{"id":527577,"date":"2023-04-17T20:42:07","date_gmt":"2023-04-18T03:42:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=527577"},"modified":"2023-04-17T20:42:07","modified_gmt":"2023-04-18T03:42:07","slug":"eric-brown-emma-finlin-claim-canadian-open-water-titles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/eric-brown-emma-finlin-claim-canadian-open-water-titles\/","title":{"rendered":"Eric Brown, Emma Finlin Claim Canadian Open Water Titles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Eric Brown, Emma Finlin Claim Canadian Open Water Titles<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Eric Brown<\/strong> and <strong>Emma Finlin<\/strong> were crowned Canadian Open Water champions <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimming.ca\/en\/news\/2023\/04\/15\/six-swimmers-earn-team-canada-spots-at-open-water-trials\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this weekend at the nation\u2019s championships in the Cayman Islands<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Brown (Pointe-Claire Swim Club) won the men\u2019s 10-kilometer race at Governor\u2019s Beach in a time of 1 hour, 55 minutes 24.7 seconds. He finished 2.5 seconds ahead of <strong>Eric Hedlin<\/strong> (Pacific Coast Dolphins).<\/p>\n<p>Both swimmers will head to the World Championships. Brown, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/penny-oleksiak-taylor-ruck-named-to-canadas-world-championship-team\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">who qualified in a pool event<\/a>, finished 26th at worlds last year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the end I know I also have the speed so I could just come home. It kind of all went to plan,\u201d Brown, the 400, 800 and 1,500 free champion at the recent Bell Canadian Trials in the pool, told Swimming Canada. \u201cI\u2019m excited to see what I can do this summer. I\u2019ll try things out and do the double with pool and open water, and just have fun with it a week apart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Third went to <strong>Benjamin Cote,<\/strong> 21.3 seconds behind Brown. He will swim the 5-kilometer race <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/maggie-macneil-headlines-canada-squad-at-2023-pan-am-games\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">at the Pan Am Games in Santiago, Chile, in October<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On the women\u2019s side, Finlin and <strong>Abby Dunford<\/strong> traded the lead most of the way. The two 17-year-olds ended up booking trips to Fukuoka for Worlds, Finlin winning in 2:05.00.6 after pulling away on the last lap of her first 10K. She was 36.5 seconds up on Dunford.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m really happy about it,\u201d said Finlin, who is part of Team Canada\u2019s delegation for both Worlds and the Pan Am Games. \u201cIt\u2019s my first 10-km so it was mostly for the experience but it\u2019s really great to qualify for worlds in open water.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dunford is heading back to Worlds, having finished 38th at worlds last year. Third was Etobicoke Swim Club\u2019s <strong>Bailey O\u2019Regan<\/strong>, more than five minutes off the pace, to get a Pan Ams spot.<\/p>\n<p>Finlan also won the 5-kilometer race on Sunday in a time of 1:04.26.2. Dunford was second, a minute back, with O\u2019Regan third, just two seconds back of Dunford.<\/p>\n<p>Hedlin got the win in the men\u2019s 5K with a time of 59:57.6. He was 17 seconds ahead of club teammate <strong>Jon McKay,<\/strong> with <strong>Ilya Kharun<\/strong> in third place.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re excited for the world championships. We\u2019ve got a fairly young team with a mix of some experience on the men\u2019s side,\u201d said Swimming Canada Distance\/Open Water Coach <strong>Mark Perry<\/strong>, who will serve as the open water head coach at Worlds. \u201cEric Hedlin is a veteran with a couple of world medals under his belt and we\u2019ll be building on the work that we did with a couple on the women\u2019s side and with Eric Brown on the men\u2019s side. They\u2019ve been last year and they\u2019ve got some experience, and then a couple of new additions with Ben Cote and Bailey getting a chance to do the 5-km.
