Bartels \u201971 title.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s no change in personnel, as current women\u2019s head coach <strong>Patrick Gallagher\u2019s<\/strong> title now includes that endowment. That brings it in accord with the title on men\u2019s swimming head coach <strong>Wes Newman\u2019s<\/strong> position.<\/p>\n<p>The recent gift is designed, \u201cto ensure equity between both teams for the future by merging the head coaching endowments for men\u2019s and women\u2019s swimming and diving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is apropos that as we have celebrated the 50th anniversary of Title IX over the past year, we now celebrate the Bartels\u2019 most recent generous gift that will not only enhance the experience and competitiveness of our swimming and diving teams, but also will promote equity within our athletic community,\u201d said Dr. <strong>Nicki Moore,<\/strong> Cornell\u2019s Director of Athletics &amp; Physical Education, <a href=\"https:\/\/cornellbigred.com\/news\/2023\/4\/11\/mens-swimming-diving-phil-bartels-71-expands-support-for-swimming-and-diving-names-womens-head-coach-position.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in a university statement<\/a>. \u201cWe are grateful and inspired by this gift. We are committed to activate it in the service of transformative student-athlete experiences in leadership, inclusion, and excellence. We celebrate the Bartels family\u2019s unwavering commitment to our student-athletes and to the values of Cornell University.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Bartels family has ties that go back generations in Ithaca. <strong>Henry E. \u201cHank\u201d Bartels<\/strong> graduated from Cornell in 1948, after service in World War II interrupted his studies at Rutgers University. He married a fellow Cornell grad, <strong>Nancy Horton Bartels.<\/strong> Their $15 million unrestricted gift to endowment to the school\u2019s athletics\/physical education programs in 2000 was the largest ever given to the department.<\/p>\n<p>Henry Bartels\u2019 name graces the title <a href=\"https:\/\/cornellbigred.com\/sports\/mens-rowing\/roster\/coaches\/tyler-nase\/9088\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">for the head coach of lightweight rowing<\/a>, which Henry competed in at both Rutgers and Cornell. Their son, <strong>Philip H. Bartels,<\/strong> was in 1999 attached to the men\u2019s head swim coach position.<\/p>\n<p>Phil Bartels swam at Cornell and continues to be a major donor to the program, both to cover operating expenses and upgrades to facilities. He\u2019s served on a variety of councils at Cornell unrelated to athletics. Both Phil Bartels and his parents were given the Frank H.T. Rhodes Exemplary Alumni Service Award (in 2020 and 2008, respectively), while Henry and Nancy were inducted to the school\u2019s athletic hall of fame in 2001. Both of Phil\u2019s children are Cornell graduates.<\/p>\n<p>Gallagher and Newman took over in 2015, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/joe-lucia-retires-from-cornell-cornell-programs-separating\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">upon the retirement<\/a> of <strong>Joe Lucia,<\/strong> who had led the men\u2019s program for 28 years and the women\u2019s for 15. At that point, the jobs were split into two roles. Gallagher first joined the staff as an assistant in 2001. Newman is a 2009 graduate of Cornell.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m grateful for Phil\u2019s continued support of the swimming and diving program,\u201d Gallagher said. \u201cHe\u2019s already made a significant impact on the lives of many Big Red athletes, and this gift will help ensure our ability to offer future generations of women a world class, holistic athletic experience.
