San Francisco Police eventually arrived to disperse the crowd and escort Gaines away, but she did not leave until midnight after the event began at 7 p.m. PT.<\/p>\n<p>During the incident, Gaines said that she was &#8220;physically assaulted by one person.&#8221; She told CNN, &#8220;I was struck twice, both times hitting my shoulder with the second strike grazing my face. The rest of the protestors just ambushed and cornered me before I was able to move out with the help of campus police.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/04\/07\/us\/former-ncaa-swimmer-riley-gaines-assault-san-francisco-state-university\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Read the full report from CNN here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Gaines tweeted a video of the situation, which does not show the assault but does include one protester shouting, &#8220;trans rights are human rights.&#8221;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Riley_Gaines_\/status\/1644206766165737472\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> The video does contain profanity<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Gaines concluded her swimming career at the 2022 NCAA Championships, the meet where Penn&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Lia Thomas<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/lia-thomas-timeline-the-road-to-a-controversial-national-title\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">became the first trans woman to capture an NCAA title<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/the-2022-ncaa-womens-championships-day-2-finals-500-freestyle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">500 free<\/a>. The day after that race, Thomas <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ncaa-womens-championships-taylor-ruck-wins-duel-with-isabel-ivey-in-200-free-lia-thomas-finishes-fifth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tied for fifth<\/a> with Gaines in the 200 free, and Gaines <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/riley-gaines-i-left-there-with-no-trophy-after-tie-with-lia-thomas-kentucky-standout-disappointed-with-ncaa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">made headlines days later when she said it was &#8220;disheartening&#8221; how Thomas had received the fifth-place trophy<\/a> with Gaines&#8217; identical trophy to come in the mail. Since then, Gaines has become a political activist arguing for &#8220;protecting women&#8217;s sports&#8221; as a space for cisgender women only.<\/p>\n<p>In the months before that NCAA meet, there had been extensive debate within the swimming community as to whether Thomas should have been competing in women&#8217;s events. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ncaa-reveals-process-for-transgender-athlete-championship-eligibility\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The NCAA unveiled new guidelines to address issues of inequity with trans participation<\/a> in hopes of avoiding another controversial situation in the future.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/usa-swimming-releases-new-transgender-athlete-policy-evidence-of-mitigation-required\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new USA Swimming policy on transgender participation released in February 2022<\/a> included &#8220;specific guidelines&#8230; for both non-elite and elite athletes and elite events,&#8221; focusing on inclusion for non-elite athletes, allowing for transgender athletes &#8220;to experience the sport of swimming in a manner that is consistent with their gender identity and expression,&#8221; while relying on &#8220;science and medical evidence-based methods to provide a level-playing field for elite cisgender women.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Riley Gaines Confronted By
