NCAA Men’s Championships: Max McHugh Takes Top Seed, Aims for Three-peat in 100 Breaststroke<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

The NCAA Division I Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships continued on Friday morning with the prelims of the 100 breaststroke.<\/p>\n

Minnesota’s Max McHugh<\/strong> is aiming for a third consecutive title in the event, this time in his home pool as the meet is in Minneapolis.<\/p>\n

He has the top seed heading into finals in an extremely close field.<\/p>\n

In the first circle-seeded heat, Cal’s Liam Bell<\/strong> led at the turn and hung on in 50.76. Alabama senior Derek Maas<\/strong> was just behind in 51.05 from lane one.<\/p>\n

In the second circle-seeded heat, McHugh led at the halfway point and clung to a narrow lead in the final turn. But it was a strong turn and he got to the wall first in 50.26 ahead of Indiana’s Van<\/strong> Mathias<\/strong> 50.57 and Cal’s Reece Whitley<\/strong> (51.00).<\/p>\n

In the final heat, Caspar Corbeau<\/strong> led nearly start to finish to touch in 50.82.<\/p>\n

McHugh, swimming in his home pool, took the top overall time in 50.26, followed by Mathias (50.57), Bell (50.76), Corbeau (50.82), Florida’s Dillon Hillis<\/strong> (50.88), Whitley (51.00), Maas (51.05) and Louisville senior Denis Petrashov<\/strong> (51.12).<\/p>\n
