Freeman Aquatic Center.<\/p>\n<p>Crooks was .08 ahead of Florida freshman <strong>Josh Liendo. Bjorn Seeliger<\/strong> of Cal was third in 18.67. <strong>Brooks Curry,<\/strong> last year\u2019s champion, finished fourth in 18.76.<\/p>\n<p>Crooks&#8217; win is the first NCAA men&#8217;s title for a Tennessee swimmer since 2001 (Michael Gilliam, 100 backstroke).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/meet\/2023-ncaa-division-i-mens-championships\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meet Page<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/results\/2023-ncaa-division-i-mens-psych-sheet\/ncaa-college\/2023\/March\/8?rtn=%2Fresults%2Fall\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Psych Sheets<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/swimmeetresults.tech\/NCAA-Division-I-Men-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Live Results<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Crooks entered as only the second man, alongside <strong>Caeleb Dressel,<\/strong> to have covered 50 meters of freestyle in less than 18 seconds. That doesn&#8217;t, to the Caymanian&#8217;s mind, add any pressure.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think just trying to realize that it\u2019s been a fun season,&#8221; Crooks said. &#8220;It\u2019s only my second season here at UT, and I\u2019ve really enjoyed it. I think just trying to relax and trust the training and know that you\u2019ve done the work. It\u2019s just trying to have fun now.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The race got off to a weird start, literally, with the gun held for a palpably long time. It meant that only <strong>Youssef Ramadan,<\/strong> in Lane 8, got out in a reaction time of under .6 seconds. (He was at .56). It helped the Virginia Tech swimmer sprint to fifth in 18.82.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It did feel a little long, but things happen, it is what it is and I\u2019m still happy with the outcome,&#8221; Crooks said. &#8220;You can\u2019t really change it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That start, they held us a long time,&#8221; Liendo said. &#8220;I was prepared and I guess ready for it. \u2026 Everyone was talking about it after the race, but sometimes you\u2019ve just got to roll with it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Cal\u2019s <strong>Jack Alexy,<\/strong> Arizona State\u2019s <strong>Jack Dolan<\/strong> and <strong>Gui Caribe<\/strong> of Tennessee rounded out the A final.<\/p>\n<p>NC State cashed in in the B final, with <strong>Nyls Korstanje<\/strong> winning it in 18.74 and <strong>Noah Henderson<\/strong> second in 18.89. <strong>David Curtiss<\/strong> tied for 14th overall. It bodes well for the 200 free relay later in the night, in which the Wolfpack are seeded second.<\/p>\n<p>Indiana\u2019s <strong>Van Mathias, <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/revitalized-van-mathias-plays-big-role-in-indianas-big-ten-title\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reinvented as a sprinter this year<\/a>, went 18.91 to lower the school record he took in the morning from <strong>Blake Pieroni.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Three of them medalists from last year were back in the A final: Curry the winner, Seeliger the runner-up and Crooks tied for third last year.
