NCAA Men’s Championships: Lyle Yost Risks It, Reaps Reward of 1-Meter Crown<\/strong><\/p>\n

By the fifth round of 1-meter diving Thursday night, Lyle Yost<\/strong> figured his originally scheduled sixth and final dive wasn\u2019t going to cut it.<\/p>\n

That one carried a 2.6 degree of difficulty. Beneath the \u201cin case of emergency break glass\u201d sign in his program was a forward two-and-a-half twister. And the way that Stanford\u2019s Jack Ryan<\/strong> and Andrew Capobianco<\/strong> of Indiana were hitting around him, the top seed out of prelims knew he needed to go big.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s kind of a high-risk, high-reward situation,\u201d Yost said. \u201cIt\u2019s a really difficult dive, but if you hit it, it can get you a lot of points.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yost nailed it, needed 71 points and getting 75 to tally 443.95 and get the win at the University of Minnesota\u2019s Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.<\/p>\n

He was pretty confident when he hit the water that he\u2019d done what he needed.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a really hard dive. It felt good,\u201d he said. \u201cThere\u2019s no way to know until the judges put their sores in, but I came out and the crowd was going wild and something felt right.\u201d<\/p>\n
