For the four swimmers on the 200 medley relay, that was just fine.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Oh yeah, I think we were&#8221; underdogs, butterflier <strong>Nyls Korstanje<\/strong> said. &#8220;And that kind of gave us a chip on the shoulder. We didn\u2019t go in as the favorite, and being the underdog is great. We\u2019re just hear to show we\u2019re not underdogs.<\/p>\n<p>NC State became the first foursome ever to break 1:21, <strong>Kacper Stokowski, Mason Hunter, <\/strong>Korstanje and <strong>David Curtiss<\/strong> setting an NCAA and U.S. Open record of 1:20.67 at the University of Minnesota&#8217;s Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center. It\u2019s the first time the Wolfpack have ever won the event. They tied for third with Cal last season.<\/p>\n<p>Stokowski put them out front by going 20.36, and Korstanje split 19.15 on fly. That handed off for Curtiss to bring it home in 18.21.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/meet\/2023-ncaa-division-i-mens-championships\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meet Page<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/results\/2023-ncaa-division-i-mens-psych-sheet\/ncaa-college\/2023\/March\/8?rtn=%2Fresults%2Fall\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Psych Sheets<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/swimmeetresults.tech\/NCAA-Division-I-Men-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Live Results<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8220;We really wanted to get this relay,&#8221; Curtiss said. &#8220;We\u2019ve been thinking and talking about it all year long. Getting the momentum started for the rest of the team is very important for us. Being able to get off on the right foot and swim the fastest that we could and do the best we could is definitely a good start and will propel the team forward.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The winning splits from this year vs. last year:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Stokowski 20.36 &#8211; Hunter 22.95 &#8211; Korstanje 19.15 &#8211; Curtiss 18.21<\/li>\n<li>Chaney 20.19 &#8211; Hillis 23.20 &#8211; Friese 19.36 &#8211; Davis 18.38<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Second was Arizona State, thanks in part to <strong>Leon Marchand<\/strong> splitting 22.27, to go 1:21.07, also under the NCAA mark of 1:21.13. Bick<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Florida was .01 second slower than this year in taking third (<strong>Adam Chaney, Aleksas Savickas, Eric Friese, Josh Liendo<\/strong>). It\u2019s the third straight medal for the Gators, having finished second in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Cal&#8217;s <strong>Bjorn Seeliger<\/strong> had the fastest backstroke time in 20.29. (Stokowski joked that for the second straight year, he was less than a tenth slower than Seeliger, by .08 last year and .07 this year.) Marchand led the breaststrokers, Korstanje the butterfliers, though he was chasing the 18.90 set by Tennessee&#8217;s <strong>Jordan Crooks<\/strong> at the SEC Championships. Liendo&#8217;s 18.03 was the fastest among the anchor legs.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It\u2019s honestly something that\u2019s years in the making,&#8221; Korstanje said of his split. &#8220;I\u2019ve been dreaming of going the fastest time in 50 fly history. Unfortunately there was someone a little bit faster, in my boy Jordan, but still it was faster than last year\u2019s fastest split in history. I\u2019m glad I hit the turn, because that\u2019s very, very important in the fly. I\u2019m glad we executed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>California was fourth. Indiana won the second of three timed heats to finish fifth in 1:51.52. The top six teams were under the pool record. All were also under the American record, dating to Cal in 2018, though all included at least one international swimmer.<\/p>\n<p>That included the international flair on the Wolfpack, which has them off to a dream start.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It feels amazing,&#8221; Stokowski said. &#8220;I told them before the race \u2013 I can tell you guys that \u2013 I believed and I told them that we can do it.
