Prize Money &#038; Schedule Unveiled"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Commonwealth silver medallist and European 800 free short-course record-holder <strong>Daniel Wiffen<\/strong> will compete at the inaugural <strong><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">LEN European Under-23 Swimming <\/span><\/strong><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\"><strong>Championships<\/strong> in Dublin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The meet will be held in the Irish capital from 11-13 August less than a fortnight after the conclusion of the pool programme at the Fukuoka <strong>World Championships<\/strong> which end on 30 July.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.len.eu\/len-european-u23-swimming-championships-event-schedule-revealed\/\">Link to schedule<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/daniel-wiffen-becoming-european-record-holder-making-irish-swimming-history-under-the-trusting-eye-of-andi-manley\/\">Daniel Wiffen On Becoming European Record-Holder<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Wiffen represented Northern Ireland at the <strong>2022 Commonwealth Games<\/strong> where he won silver in the 1500 free and Ireland at <strong>Tokyo 2020<\/strong> in the 800 and 1500.<\/p>\n<p>Coached by <strong>Andi Manley<\/strong> at Loughborough, Wiffen announced himself on the senior international stage when he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/world-championships-bobby-finke-becomes-first-american-man-to-win-800-free-world-crown-wellbrock-romanchuk-on-podium\/\">reached the 800 final at the Budapest worlds<\/a> last year, posting an Irish record of 7:46.32 in the heats &#8211; one of seven national marks he holds in the long and short-course pools.<\/p>\n<p>Then came the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/daniel-wiffen-becoming-european-record-holder-making-irish-swimming-history-under-the-trusting-eye-of-andi-manley\/\">European short-course mark of 7:25.96 over 800m<\/a>, Wiffen going second all-time behind only <strong>Grant Hackett<\/strong> and his world record of 7:23.42 at the <strong>Irish National Winter Championships<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Now Wiffen can look forward to competing in front of a friendly crowd at the Under-23 meet while also looking to inspire onlooking youngsters as he told LEN:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cIt\u2019s going to be a nice home championships for me and I will be there competing straight after the World Championships.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">\u201cI\u2019ve already been told so many people are going to come to watch me, so I\u2019m really looking forward to that home crowd.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"oembed-wrap\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\ud83c\uddee\ud83c\uddea <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WiffenDaniel?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@WiffenDaniel<\/a> is heading to Dublin!<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/swimireland?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@swimireland<\/a> swimmer confirmed that he will be competing at the first-ever LEN European U23 <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Swimming?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Swimming<\/a> Championships in front of the home fans, August 11-13th \ud83c\udfca <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/LMMP9R47xB\">pic.twitter.com\/LMMP9R47xB<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; European Aquatics (@EuroAquatics) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EuroAquatics\/status\/1638495737523892224?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 22, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">Wiffen will be among around\u00a0<\/span>600 athletes from over 40 nations due to enter the three-day competition which comprises more than 300 races.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s an open event with non-LEN member federations permitted to enter swimmers with the USA having confirmed they will send a team.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">European governing body LEN have confirmed that a total prize fund of \u20ac5000 will be available, \u20ac2500 for women and \u20ac2500 for men, which will be awarded to the \u2018best performances\u2019 at Dublin 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">This will be decided according to the <strong>World Aquatics<\/strong> points system.<\/p>\n<p>The first race will be the women&#8217;s 50m breaststroke with the\u00a0mixed 4&#215;100 free concluding the competition following the men&#8217;s 800 free &#8211; replete with Wiffen &#8211; which is the final individual race of the three-day meet.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s the first major competition to be held in Ireland since the 2003 European short-course which featured the likes of <strong>Pieter van den Hoogenband<\/strong>, <strong>Laszlo Cseh<\/strong>, <strong>Britta Steffen<\/strong> and <strong>Mel Marshall<\/strong> &#8211;
