NCAA Women’s Championships: Virginia, Stanford, NC State Set for High-Scoring Friday Night (Heat Sheets)<\/strong><\/p>\n

During the Friday morning prelims session at the NCAA Women’s Championships, Virginia swimmers claimed the top seed in two events with\u00a0Alex Walsh<\/strong> topping the 400 IM<\/a> and sister\u00a0Gretchen Walsh<\/strong> swimming the third-fastest time in history in the 100 backstroke<\/a>, while Stanford also had two No. 1 results, with\u00a0Torri Huske<\/strong> first in the 100 butterfly<\/a> and\u00a0Taylor Ruck<\/strong> ahead in the 200 freestyle<\/a>. USC’s\u00a0Kaitlyn Dobler<\/strong> finished first in a tight 100 breaststroke<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The finals session will include those five events plus 3-meter diving and the 400 medley relay, beginning at 6 p.m. from the Allan Jones Aquatic Center in Knoxville, Tenn.<\/p>\n

The top-performing team in the morning was Virginia, already leading the team scores by 46.5 points, and the Cavaliers qualified seven championship finalists and two consolation finalists for Friday. In addition to the Walsh sisters,\u00a0Ella Nelson<\/strong> placed second in the 400 IM, and Kate Douglass<\/strong> is third in the 100 fly while\u00a0Aimee Canny<\/strong> and\u00a0Maxine Parker\u00a0<\/strong>have A-final swims in the 200 free.\u00a0Emma Weber<\/strong> snuck into the 100 breast top heat, and the Cavaliers are set to extend their lead over Texas.<\/p>\n

Stanford also qualified for nine individual swims in the evening session, with Claire Curzan<\/strong> set for both the 100 fly and 100 back finals plus\u00a0Lucy Bell<\/strong> in the 400 IM and\u00a0Kayla Wilson<\/strong> in the 200 free. The Cardinal, currently in fourth place overall, look set to move into third and potentially second in the evening.<\/p>\n

NC State went four up and five down in the morning, with Grace Sheble<\/strong> (400 IM),\u00a0Kylee Alons<\/strong> (100 fly),\u00a0Heather MacCausland\u00a0<\/strong>(100 breast) and\u00a0Katharine Berkoff<\/strong> (100 back) in the top heats of their respective events. The Wolfpack currently occupy 11th place overall after a disqualification in the 200 free relay Thursday evening. If not for that DQ, NC State would be in fifth position, so head coach\u00a0Braden Holloway’s\u00a0<\/strong>squad will need to continue showing up big to rebound.<\/p>\n

Texas will have four A-final swims as well, with\u00a0Emma Sticklen<\/strong> in the 100 fly,\u00a0Anna Elendt<\/strong> and\u00a0Lydia Jacoby<\/strong> in the 100 breast and\u00a0Olivia Bray<\/strong> in the 100 back. However,\u00a0Kelly Pash<\/strong> missing the 200 free A-final by one hundredth was a significant blow for the Longhorns. Other teams with multiple A-finalists include: Ohio State with Katherine Zenick<\/strong> in the 100 fly plus\u00a0Josie Panitz<\/strong> and Hannah Bach<\/strong> in the 100 breast, Florida with\u00a0Emma Weyant<\/strong> and\u00a0Mabel Zavaros<\/strong> in the 400 IM, Louisville with Gabi Albiero<\/strong> in the 100 fly and\u00a0Paige Hetrick<\/strong> in the 200 free and Tennessee with\u00a0Brooklyn Douthwright\u00a0<\/strong>in the 200 free and\u00a0Josephine Fuller<\/strong> in the 100 back.<\/p>\n
