{"id":524289,"date":"2023-03-10T20:44:02","date_gmt":"2023-03-11T03:44:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=524289"},"modified":"2023-03-11T07:45:50","modified_gmt":"2023-03-11T14:45:50","slug":"kaylee-mckeown-back-in-the-swim-of-things-after-her-200m-backstroke-world-record-with-praise-for-regan-smith","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/kaylee-mckeown-back-in-the-swim-of-things-after-her-200m-backstroke-world-record-with-praise-for-regan-smith\/","title":{"rendered":"Kaylee McKeown Back In The Swim Of Things After Her 200m Backstroke World Record With Praise For Regan Smith"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Kaylee McKeown Back In The Swim Of Things After Her 200m Backstroke World Record With Praise For Regan Smith<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Swimming\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/kaylee-mckeown-pops-sizzling-world-record-swim-of-203-14-in-200m-backstroke-to-highlight-night-one-of-nsw-championships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">latest world record holder<\/a> <strong>Kaylee McKeown<\/strong> was back in the swim of things on day two of the 2023 NSW State Open Championships in Sydney today.<\/p>\n<p>McKeown (Griffith University, QLD) arrived at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre early this morning for media commitments after her stunning 200m backstroke world record of 2:03.14 last night, before swimming a rare 100m butterfly heat in a personal best time of 1:01.63.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nsw.swimming.org.au\/news-articles\/2023-nsw-state-open-championships\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meet Page<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The 21-year-old then won her backstroke heat comfortably in 1:00.67 \u2013 and is the second fastest qualifier for tonight\u2019s final with good friend and fellow world champion, <strong>Mollie O\u2019Callaghan<\/strong> (St Peters Western, QLD) the fastest from today\u2019s preliminaries in 1:00.34.<\/p>\n<div class=\"oembed-wrap\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Kaylee McKeown - 100m Backstroke Heat, Day 2 of 2023 NSW State Championships\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kHpE31GLWNI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>McKeown thrives on competition while in heavy work as many of her training partners and rivals continue to battle through the hard yards of their 70km training blocks.<\/p>\n<p>The triple Olympic champion and reigning 100 and 200m Commonwealth and World Short Course champion holds the world record in the 100m long course at 57.45 (28.10\/29.35) set at the 2021 Olympic Trials in Adelaide.<\/p>\n<p>McKeown reflected on her world record swim saying it\u2019s never expected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut touching the wall last night and seeing the time it was pretty unbelieveable. Photo Courtesy: Delly Carr (Swimming NSW).<\/p><\/div>\n<p>And McKeown was full of praise for her US rival and former world record holder, Regan Smith.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRegan is an unbelievable athlete and she swam that (world record) back in 2019 and she\u2019s only got room for improvement,\u201d said McKeown.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe times she keeps producing are pretty nerve wracking but (the challenges) keep us in the sport and keeps us moving forward.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The world record doesn\u2019t mean I stop working and stop putting the hard work in; it basically means I\u2019m on the right pathway to the Olympics which is the end goal for me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe plan is to just train hard. Yang <\/strong>(SOPAC, NSW) while world champion Winnington was impressive in winning the 400m freestyle.<\/p>\n<p>The women\u2019s 400m freestyle will feature Olympic champion and world record holder <strong>Ariarne Titmus<\/strong> (St Peters Western, QLD) who won last night\u2019s 800m freestyle in 8:19.33.<\/p>\n<p>Titmus clocked 4:11.54, the third fastest time, cruising through the heats behind SPW training partners O\u2019Callaghan in 4:10.46 and <strong>Eve Thomas <\/strong>in 4:11.38 with World SC champion <strong>Lani Pallister<\/strong> (Griffith University, QLD) \u2013 second to Titmus over the 800m, fifth fastest in 4:12.68.<\/p>\n<p>The women\u2019s 50m freestyle features an all-star field of qualifiers led by Birmingham Commonwealth Games bronze medallist in this event <strong>Shayna Jack<\/strong> (St Peters Western, QLD) 24.65 ahead of Olympic champion <strong>Emma McKeon<\/strong> (Griffith University, QLD) in 24.90 followed by Marion, SA training partners <strong>Madi Wilson <\/strong>and <strong>Meg Harris<\/strong> both on 25.08 with16-year-olds <strong>Milla Jansen<\/strong> (Bond, QLD) and <strong>Olivia Wunsch <\/strong>(Carlile, NSW) on 25.29 and
